5 Chapter 5
Not waiting to finish watching, Garrison slapped the phone out of
his hand and cursed,
“Where did this come from?”
The man was startled and stammered in response,
“A reporter from the station gave it to me an hour ago.”
“I never thought Jolene’s little lapdog would actually grow some balls and leave without a word.”
As he spoke, Garrison’s expression suddenly changed, and he exploded in anger,
“Shut up!”
“There’s no way Jolene would bear to leave me… It’s impossible!”
With that, he stumbled past everyone and rushed towards the
door.
Melody walked over and blocked his path, saying,
“Garrison, calm down.”
“This must be another one of her playing–hard–to–get tricks. You’ve fallen for it once before, you can’t trust her again!”
Hearing this, Garrison finally calmed down a bit. He straightened his tie and reassured himself,
“That’s right, this must be another one of Jolene’s acts.”
“For seven years, she hasn’t missed a single one of my birthdays.

She must be preparing some kind of surprise!”
“As for that video, it’s definitely just a smoke screen. She thinks she can fool me, but it’s not that easy!”
At that moment, Garrison’s assistant knocked and entered, saying,
“Sir, your wife has sent something for you.“Garrison’s demeanor shifted from his earlier unease to one of confident assurance as he
took the bag, declaring,
“I knew it! I told you she might have left me!”
“Still putting on an act, yet eagerly bringing the gift right to my doorstep!”
As he spoke, he began to open the bag, only to find it contained nothing but a cell phone.
The phone’s usage history had been wiped clean, leaving only a single surveillance video.
The parking lot footage was crystal clear, both in image and audio, providing a complete view of what transpired after Garrison and Melody left that night.
The reporter mercilessly swung their telephoto lens, repeatedly striking blows to my head with each shot.
Melody had initially believed her actions were covert enough to go undetected, but upon hearing the reporter’s final warning, the color drained from her face.
“What nonsense is he spouting? I don’t even know him!”
“It must be Jolene trying to smear my name! Look, I’m the one

who’s injured!”
This time, however, Garrison’s friends clearly didn’t buy Melody’s story. Instead, they questioned her:
“You’re just startled, that’s all. Jolene nearly lost her eyesight. If this were truly her own ploy for sympathy, why would she go to such extremes?“Melody continued to argue with an expression of disbelief,
“Jolene’s injuries are all fake! She’s acting, don’t let her fool you!”
The crowd wasn’t swayed by her, and the voices of doubt grew louder,
“Before I saw this video, I still believed she was acting, but this video shows no signs of editing at all!”
“If you did it, just admit it. Why are you trying to weasel out of it?”
Seeing that they wouldn’t believe her, Melody turned her gaze to Garrison, pleading pitifully,
“Garrison, they’re all wrongly accusing me, but you believe me, don’t you?”
Garrison stared at Melody for a long time, his thoughts unclear, before slowly speaking,
“Melody, of course I believe you!”
“Jolene must think this will drive a wedge between us. Don’t worry,
I won’t fall for her tricks!”
He threw his phone into the trash can, then commanded,
“The party continues!”

“I don’t believe it. That lapdog Jolene won’t show up!”
But the party continued until evening, and I never appeared.
Garrison’s hand gripping the champagne glass gradually tightened, an endless unease rising in his heart. Finally, he couldn’t take it anymore. He stood up, grabbed the car keys, and headed towards the underground parking garage.
