Chapter 6
My sarcasm must have touched a nerve.
David turned on me, all defensive and
sarcastic.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” he
demanded.
“Who do you think has been paying the bills?
“Even if it’s your money, it’s still from my
paycheck, from all the money I’ve been giving you.”
David gave me seven hundred bucks a month for household expenses.

That barely covered groceries, let alone all of
Brittany’s extras.
I just stared at him, my heart sinking.
I didn’t even bother to argue; it was a waste
of breath.
“Fine,” I said.
“From now on, you pay for everything.

yelled at me.
“You make her beg for money?
“Are you sending my money to your family?”
I looked at the man in front of me and
realized I didn’t know him at
く
realized I didn’t know him at all.
Brittany was wearing designer clothes and
shoes, and her private tutoring sessions cost
over a hundred dollars an hour.
If he paid any attention, he’d realize seven
hundred dollars wouldn’t even cover the
booze at Brittany’s party.
I couldn’t even describe how disappointed I
was.
“Fine!” I yelled.
“From today on, you two are on your own!
<
“Fine!” I yelled.
“From today on, you two are on your own!
“Don’t come crying to me when you mess up, and don’t blame me when things go wrong!”
I grabbed a glass off the table and smashed it
on the floor.
Glass shards flew everywhere like tiny, angry stars.
Brittany and David just stood there, stunned.
After eight years of marriage, this was the first time I’d lost it.
