I saw Brittany again years later.
She was working at a restaurant.
I was having dinner with my company and
some new interns.
Brittany brought our food.
She saw me and froze.
“Mom?” she asked.
I didn’t answer and took a sip of my tea.
Everyone looked at her.
She got nervous and grabbed her apron.

One of the interns shouted, “Brittany? What
are you doing here?”
Brittany blushed and ran out of the room.
Everyone looked at the intern.
I looked at him.
He coughed and said, “That’s Brittany, the
best student in the city! The teachers almost
got in a fight over her!
“Her grades were good until she had a
boyfriend.”
He sighed.
“Then she got pregnant, and her mom went to

the school and screamed at everyone,” he
continued.
“She wanted the guy to come out, and she
wanted money.
“Everyone knew about it, so she dropped out
of school.”
The others gasped.
He sighed again.
“It’s sad,” he said.

“I hadn’t seen her for years, and now she’s a
waitress.
“I used to have a crush on her…”

He laughed, and the others teased him.
