- 7.
Jess told me that Danny wanted to see me.
Usually, she would’ve said no way, trying to
cut off anything that could trigger me.
く
But he’d been waiting, day and night.
And I was having a pretty good day.
So she asked if I wanted to see him.
I figured, I couldn’t keep him waiting forever.
Danny stood in the doorway, wearing a white
shirt, looking like he hadn’t slept in days. I
could see he’d been crying.
He looked at me for a long time, then finally
said,
“I’m sorry…
I smiled kindly and shook my head.

“It wasn’t your fault.”
Jess clenched her fists, like she was about to
explode.
I held up my hand to tell her to calm down.
She understood. She left us alone.
“If it wasn’t for me, this wouldn’t have
happened… It was the stupid door, it had
nothing to do with you…”
“Sarah’s such an idiot. It’s one thing to play
with people’s feelings, but she had no right to
ruin your life… And I didn’t even like her…”
Danny was talking fast. He looked like he was
about to crack.
く
I could tell he’d been having a rough time,
too.
His voice broke, and he was crying.
“Those were the hands you used to save
lives… How could she…?”
He stared at my left arm.
I flashed back to the last time we met.
When Danny got hurt, my mind went blank. All
I could see was the blood on his hand.
I grabbed his arm and dragged him to the
nurse’s station.
A strip of red peeked out from under the
bandage
“I’m sorry. I didn’t know anyone would be out
there…”
I knew that students and doctors came to
that room.
If his hand was seriously hurt, it would be
terrible.
Danny moved his wrist, saying it was fine. He
even smiled.
“It’s nothing. It’s not like it’s your fault.”
“No way!”
I cut him off.
“A doctor’s hands are precious! You can’t just
He started crying again, repeating what I said.
to him.
“A doctor’s hands are precious! You can’t just
say stuff like that…”
“Danny.”
He looked up at me, tears streaming down his
face.
“It wasn’t your fault.”
“Don’t feel guilty. Don’t put so much pressure
on yourself.”
“My life is over, but you’re just getting
started.”
“Take care of your hands.”
く
I grabbed the scar cream I’d gotten for him.
I was gonna give it to him soon, but then
everything happened.
I steadied his shaking hand and put the cream
in it.
“You have to be the best doctor you can be.
You have to make us proud.”
Looking at him, I thought I could see myself,
standing in front of people, confident and
happy.
It was my last hope, and an impossible dream.
