She opened her mouth, then closed it, repeating the process several times without being able to utter a word.
Finally, she stopped trying to speak and just quietly watched her son, hoping he would clarify what was going on.
“I want to remarry Ellis,” Easton said, not elaborating further, leaving her with just that short sentence.
Sophia was practically struck dumb by shock.
Her son and Ellis hadn’t been divorced long, and right after the divorce, Easton had adamantly said he wouldn’t remarry. Now, not only did he miss Ellis, but he also wanted to remarry her, as if a fairy tale had come to life.
“You want to remarry Ellis? Have you asked her? Does she want to? If I remember correctly, she…”
Sophia vividly recalled that Ellis wanted the divorce because she no longer loved Easton. She felt their marriage lacked an emotional foundation, which is why she wanted to separate.
Easton hadn’t made any real effort to keep Ellis, and had even resorted to drastic measures that drove Ellis to seek comfort from her, looking so pitiable it tugged at one’s heartstrings.
“She doesn’t love you anymore, how do you plan to handle this?” Sophia wasn’t mocking the contrast in her son’s attitudes, but part of her was secretly pleased that her daughter–in–law might not end up with someone else. However, Easton had not left himself any room to maneuver back then, making this tricky.
“Did she ever love me? Easton countered.
“Don’t be foolish!” Sophia couldn’t hear to hear Easton question this, “Of course Ellis loved you. Why else would she marry you and think about having children with you?”
If Easton and Ellis hadn’t divorced, according to Ellis’s plans, Sophia reckoned she would have been holding a grandchild by
next year.
Now, however, there was no grandchild in sight, the daughter–in–law had left, and her son was talking about wanting to remarry. Her son’s brain seemed to be for decoration only; talking to her way useless, he should be speaking with Ellis!
Hearing his mother mention having children, Easton remembered Ellis once looking forward to starting a family with him, and he had even suspected once that her vomiting was due to pregnancy.
If Ellis had really been pregnant then, they might have had their first child, and perhaps they wouldn’t have divorced at all. They would have become a family of three, and he wouldn’t have to worry about Ellis refusing to remarry him.
Seeing her son’s eyelids droop and his lips press into a thin line, as if deep in thought, Sophia didn’t disturb him.
She had raised a foolish son!
He couldn’t even tell whether Ellis loved him or not.
Sophia’s scrutinizing gaze made Easton stop his introspection and look up, his lips tight as he said, “I’ve talked to Ellis about remarrying, and she rejected me.”
At this moment, he couldn’t worry about whether Ellis truly loved him.
That question seemed irrelevant now… What mattered was getting Ellis to agree to remarry. Once he said this, Sophia understood everything.
No wonder her son was suddenly asking her these perplexing questions; he had faced rejection from Ellis.

Considering how hard it must have been for her son to be rejected, she held back her initial thoughts and instead said, “After what you did, how could Ellis not hold a grudge? You can’t expect her to agree to remarry you just like that.”
“What should I do then?” Easton’s eyes were filled with a longing for advice, hoping his mother could help.
Ping together everything her son had said since he walked in, Sophia understood
Her son was trying to use her to bridge the distance that the divorce had created between him and Ellis, ideally helping him smoothly remarry Ellis.
Thinking this over, Sophia sighed softly. “It’s difficult”
Ellis had been her prospective daughter–in–law and then daughter–in–law for a few years, and while she got along well with Sophia and understood what made her happy, that didn’t mean Ellis was someone who could be easily manipulated.
She could tell Ellis was reserved, only willing to interact with those she chose to, ignoring those she didn’t care for and often not even bothering with appearances, preferring others to handle social interactions for her.
“This is something you need to resolve yourselves; I shouldn’t interfere a second time. Sophia decided not to meddle.
While she was secretly glad her daughter–in–law might not change, experience had shown that elders interfering in the younger generation’s affairs, whether right or wrong, often didn’t end well and just led to resentment.
“Mom, are you really my mother?” Easton hadn’t expected his mother to refuse his request. You pressured me to marry Ellis before, why won’t you help me now that I want to remarry her?”
“Because I am your mother. I won’t interfere,” Sophia didn’t want to be blamed by her son and potentially by Ellis later. “Besides, Ellis isn’t my daughter, and I doubt she’d be as obedient as you.”
