Just then, someone eager to use the elevator saw them inside and, not realizing it was in use, interrupted Easton, asking. “Are you two using the elevator?”
Ellis glanced at the person outside and said, “Sorry, we are.”
The person didn’t say anything else, but gave them a peculiar look, probably wondering why they were chatting inside the jelevator.
Easton, frustrated at being interrupted, coldly scanned the intruder and continued, “We may be divorced, but you’re still Emma’s adopted daughter. We’re technically relatives, and it’s inconvenient if we can’t contact each other.”
The person outside was about to leave, but upon hearing this, they turned back to look at them more closely.
Being Lois’s personal secretary meant she wasn’t just any employee; her position guaranteed a lot of attention. Noticing that the person who had just questioned them was still there, and seeing the surprise in their eyes, Ellis felt like punching Easton.

At work, she maintained a single status and never shared her personal life. Morty’s actions had already sparked gossip among some colleagues, and having people directly ask her about it was annoying enough.
If the news that she was divorced spread across the office because of what Easton said today, she was sure it wouldn’t take a day before everyone knew, and they’d all be gossiping about her behind her back.
Though no colleague had bluntly insulted her, being talked about in terms of her relationships was like being reminded of her foolish past actions–so irritating!
Easton awaited her response, and the onlooker outside clearly wanted to keep listening, not moving an inch. Ellis rubbed her temples, feeling a headache coming on.
Why does he think we must keep in touch after the divorce?
She pointed towards the elevator doors, barely containing her anger, “Just go.”
Easton didn’t want to leave.
But he started walking out of the elevator anyway, his gaze lingering on her face. Without a mirror, he couldn’t see his own expression.
But he imagined his eyes couldn’t hide his greed, appreciation, and longing. He longed to see her, cherished every second of seeing her, and wished he could at least kiss her goodbye or give her a hug.
Easton looked at her intently, and Ellis didn’t understand why he was doing that.
All she felt was an intense discomfort from his stare, almost making her skin crawl.
She instinctively turned her face away, not meeting Easton’s eyes, and pressed the button to close the elevator doors, wanting to quickly separate herself from her ex in different spaces, to have something block him from getting close to her.
Taking two steps out of the elevator, Easton paused.
Hearing the doors close, he couldn’t help but look back. The bystander, still there, watched Easton and the ascending elevator, their curiosity unabated as they mentally replayed the conversation between Easton and Ellis.

Filled with the image of the girl’s departure, Easton didn’t notice the bystander’s changing expressions.
As he turned away, he pursed his lips and continued walking.
With Easton gone, Ellis felt as if the office air had freshened. She had just sat down at her desk when she caught the puzzled looks of her colleagues.
The colleague who had previously asked about Easton came over again, asking, “Ms. Harper, was that handsome guy a relative of yours? Your brother, cousin?”
Already sickened by her ex, and with her colleagues not stopping their gossip, Ellis wanted to tell them to shut up if it weren’t for the need to maintain workplace decorum.
She tapped her keyboard a bit too forcefully, making a sharp noise.
“Why are you curious about my family? Focus on work.”
Her words hinted at her annoyance and warned her colleague to stop the gossip before she lost her temper.
Not being insensitive, the colleague shut up, pretending they hadn’t spoken. But in the gossip–hungry group chat among colleagues, a shocking message popped up.
“Holy crap! Ms. Harper just came down in the elevator with her ex–husband!”
Ex–husband? As the colleague glanced at the group message, they also sneakily watched Ellis.
The man in the elevator with Easton, wasn’t that Mr. Hudson who Madam Lois had brought up?
“The scoop–how do you know that guy is Ms. Harper’s ex–husband?”
