- 6.
When I went downstairs, I heard everyone
laughing and talking.
I saw Brittany snuggled up next to Mom,
smiling.
She looked up and gave me a little, annoying
look.
I smiled. Did she really think that would make
me jealous?
As I walked past the couch, Mom saw I was
heading out and grabbed her phone.
“Kayla, don’t be afraid to spend a little when
you’re shopping. I’ll send you some money.”
I nodded, and saw Brittany’s face twist.
In her mind, all that money belonged to her,
not to some outsider.
Sometimes it was funny, like having a little
doll whose face I could change anytime I
wanted.
く
She suddenly spoke up, “Mom, can I go
shopping? I’ve never been to a fancy mall.”
Mom felt bad, since it was her first time.
“Sure, honey, I’ll take you.”
Mom looked at me, all sweet. “Are you
picking up that bag you ordered? Can I come
with you?”
I knew she was trying to stop me from feeling
bad if she went to the mall alone with
Brittany.
“No…”
I didn’t want to say yes, but I glanced at
Brittany’s hateful face and changed my mind.
“Sure.”
When we got to the car, Brittany sat next to
Mom.
I glared at her and grabbed the keys to my
Maserati.
When I drove past them, I saw Brittany’s
jealous, sad face and smiled.
She was thinking too small. Did she think I
wanted to play her stupid games?
I knew how to change the rules anytime I
wanted.
Brittany was good at pretending, though. She
was back to normal in a second.
“You’re so cool, sis. I’ve never seen such a
fancy car.”
I put on my sunglasses and drawled, “If you
like it, you can look at it all you want.”
I waved and drove off.
