- 2.
Sarah stormed off in her stilettos, and I drove
out to the country to clear my head.
I was still shaken. The memory of that knife
was still sharp, reminding me of everything
that had happened before.
But now I had a new problem. Where was I
going to find a groom?
I wandered off the road and then, I saw
something unbelievable.
An older woman grabbing a young guy’s arm.
“Come on, honey, give me a hug!”
く
The guy looked uncomfortable and tried to
pull away, but the woman kept coming at him.
I couldn’t stand to watch someone getting
bullied. I grabbed the guy’s arm and stepped
in front of him. “Leave him alone, lady. He’s
my boyfriend!”
“You’re out of line!”
I couldn’t believe what I just did. I just
rescued a guy in broad daylight.
“Boy… friend?”
The woman smirked at me, but there was no
anger in her eyes.
I swallowed nervously. “Yeah! My boyfriend!
You can’t mess with him!”
Г
I grabbed his arm, my face burning.
“Okay, okay, I won’t bother you lovebirds.
Have fun on your date, bye!”
The woman left, and I was left alone with him.
“Uh… you’re holding on a little tight there, girl
friend.”
He said those last two words with a playful
tone.
I let go, looking everywhere but at him.
Wait, I saved him. Why was I so nervous?
I lifted my head and met his gorgeous face.
“So, are you short on cash or something? Is
that why she was all over you?”
<
A handsome guy and a rich woman? It didn’t
seem like a normal relationship.
I asked the most likely thing. His face
flickered, but he smiled again. “Maybe…?”
My eyes drifted down to his collarbones,
where two buttons were undone. I looked
away, clearing my throat. “Marry me. I’ll take
care of you.”
That was the bravest thing I’d ever said. He
didn’t answer. He just stared at me.
“Since you asked, Ashley, don’t regret it.”
Did he just say my name? I didn’t remember
meeting him before.
Before I could ask, he grabbed my hand,
<
lacing his fingers with mine. I flushed.
“Let’s go, honey. Where to?”
He leaned closer, whispering in my ear.
I stuttered, unable to speak. I quickly added
him as a contact, bolted to my car, and
peeled out.
Back in my car, my heart was pounding, and
my palms were sweating.
I texted him. “I’ll call you when I need you.”
I instantly regretted it. How did that sound?
But it was too late to take it back. I turned off
my phone, too scared to see his reply.
