Chapter 13
Amanda rolled on the ground, her cries of pain cutting through the air.
“William, it’s me, Amanda! You said I was your favorite…”
“You? Worthy of anything? You might as well die!”
Ignoring the desperate pleas of those around him, William kicked her again, then grabbed her by the collar and yanked her
- up.
“I‘ ll warn you now. If Avery doesn’t forgive me and doesn’t come back, you‘ 11 wish you’d never been born.‘

It was the first time anyone had ever seen

such cold, ruthless fury in his eyes. Amanda paled, fear flooding her as she trembled and begged, “William, I—”
“Get out!”
With one last forceful kick, William sent her sprawling across the floor.
The once lively engagement party fell into a suffocating silence.
Everyone exchanged uncertain glances, unsure of what to say.
Those who weren’t closely connected to him began slipping out quietly, unable to watch any longer.
Lucas didn’t have many friends, but the few he did were exceptional, genuine and kind.
Chapter 13
Their presence gradually eased the knots of tension in my chest. I began to feel more at ease, and before I knew it, I’d had more to
drink than I intended.
At first, I’d planned to join them afterward for some fun, but my poor tolerance caught up with me. By the time the first round was over, I was already stumbling, a puddle of drunken mush.
In my dazed state, I felt someone gently lift me, their arms supporting me as I was carried into a car and then out again into a house. Before long, I was placed on a soft, inviting
bed.
The unfamiliar surroundings jolted me into alertness, and instinctively, I tensed. I

grabbed the wrist of the person attempting to
pull their hand away, only to feel the cold steel of a watch against my fingers.
I blinked, fighting the haze in my head. When my eyes finally focused, I saw a man who felt both familiar and unfamiliar at the same
time.
Dazed and confused, I whispered, “Who are you?”
A faint smile touched his lips as he replied,
“I’m your fiancé, Lucas.”
“Lucas…”
I murmured his name, a strange weight pressing down on me as I struggled to place
him.

He nodded, his voice calm, “Not William. Lucas.”
The moment William’s name echoed in my mind, a rush of emotions flooded me, and my eyes stung with unshed tears.
It all came rushing back in a flood. His betrayal was the reason Lucas had replaced my fiancé.
“What’s wrong? Having second thoughts already right after the engagement?”
Lucas looked at me, his gaze complicated, as he noticed the tears welling in my eyes.
I shook my head softly, refusing to give in to the emotions threatening to spill.
“No, I don’t regret it. I just want to know…

does marrying Mr. Spencer come with a bride price?”
“Yes. What do you want as a bride price?”
I clenched my fists tightly, gritting my teeth, and said each word with deliberate force,
“I want them all dead.‘

Lucas‘ s expression shifted with a flicker of surprise. He reached out, his fingers brushing the scar on my forehead.
“Killing them might be a challenge, but I can make their lives a living nightmare.”
66
‘Good. Then let’s make their lives worse
than death.‘

“Good girl. Now, get some rest.

He leaned down, gently pulling the other side

of the blanket over me. As he drew nearer, I caught a comforting scent that wrapped
around me like a warm embrace.
Almost without thinking, I found myself wrapping my arms around his neck.
His tall figure stiffened, and he slowly lifted
his gaze
to meet mine. His Adam’s apple bobbed visibly as he spoke, his voice rough,
“Avery, you…”
“Mr. Spencer, you smell amazing.”
“I’m not wearing cologne.”
“Still, you smell wonderful. I like it.

I closed my eyes and tightened my grip around him, completely lost in the comforting scent that enveloped me.
Chapter 13
Our hearts raced in sync, separated only by
the thin fabric of our clothes. In the quiet, I heard his voice, low and filled with helplessness, “Avery, aren’t you being a bit reckless?”
That night, despite being someone who usually tossed and turned, I drifted into a deeper sleep than I’d ever known.
When I finally stirred, daylight had already poured into the room, bathing everything in a soft glow.
