The last night seemed just like any other.
Harris went to take his usual bath, while I sat nearby, fiddling with my favorite plant from my previous life.
“Helena.“”
I suddenly heard him call me.\
I froze for a moment, only relaxing when there was no second sound.”
Harris forgot his clothes again. I used to rush them over whenever he called out.
And sweetly call him “honey” in return.”
Now, the only response he got was the hollow air.
I didn’t push open that door. I just stood there in the doorway, feeling downcast.”
I knew when he called my name was just a withdrawal effect.”
When someone was used to the presence of another, losing them could make them feel utterly miserable.
The name he blurted out was just a symbol.
He didn’t truly want to see
Once I realized this, I kept myself busy tending to my plants.”
If Harris had come out then and seen the plants trembling without any wind, he might have thought it was haunted.”
That would have been fine by me, I thought.
I could have scared him a bit.
But even after an hour, he hadn’t come out.
Growing anxious, I finally pushed the door open.
He was lying in the bathtub with his eyes closed as if asleep.<
Or… dead.
I stood there, conflicted about whether to watch him die or call the police, but then he opened his eyes.
“Who’s there?“}
He yelled towards the door.”
Bathing in a house where someone had died and the bathroom door suddenly swung open.
It looked straight out of a horror movie.
But Harris looked utterly fearless and even called out my name.
I stood awkwardly to the side, thankful he couldn’t see me.”
Glancing around, I noticed he was clutching the hair tie I had left in the bathroom before I died.
The mountain winds were strong at night, and a sudden chill swept in.
Even I, a disembodied “person,” couldn’t help but shiver.
It seemed to wake Harris up.”
He stopped calling out, silently wrapped himself in a bathrobe, and went back to his room.
