John started to say something else, but my
<
teacher stepped in Tront of me.
“Get out.”
“Both of you, leave, or I’ll call security.”
John gave me one last look. “Emily, I
apologize for her. I’ll take responsibility for
the baby, I’ll compensate you for any losses.”
“I want my baby back,” I gasped, glaring at
him, hatred pouring out of me. “Or you can
die.”
He froze, his face turning pale.
I gritted out, “Get out.”
“What happened in the past is in the past. My
father is gone, I’m not going to pursue it
anymore “!
John left after saying that.
Lily gave me a smug look as she followed him
out.
I wondered when they met?
Their love seemed so deep.
The tech guy called. He’d recovered the
footage.
The video clearly showed Lily pushing me
down the stairs.
I hadn’t even had a chance to react.
John and Lily were getting married.
After the waiting period, our divorce was
<
finalized.
Their wedding was quickly planned.
John gave me a large sum of money as
compensation.
He wanted to make amends for his mistakes.
I had a few months left to live.
Lily actually sent me a wedding invitation.
I couldn’t attend the wedding.
But Lily had arranged for a livestream.
John looked incredibly happy at the wedding,
like he’d won the lottery.
く
They even had a masquerade ball.
John and I went to the same high school, and
some of our classmates were at the wedding.
Lily danced gracefully in the center of the
floor, her red lips smiling beneath her fox
mask.
John looked at her adoringly, drawing envious
glances from everyone.
Suddenly, a girl rushed up to Lily and grabbed
her hand, shouting, “Emily!”
“You were dancing like this back then, you
even stepped on John’s feet a few times!
Then you gave him CPR! See, you two were
meant to be!”
く
It was Amy, the class klutz.
My head throbbed.
I had saved John.
I remembered saving someone.
At the high school graduation party.
Someone had fainted.
Everyone was wearing masks.
It was an emergency, so I didn’t take mine off
before giving CPR.

John suddenly reacted, grabbing Lily’s arm,
his composure gone.
L
“What’s going on?! Lily, you took Emily’s
place?!”
“No! I didn’t!”
Lily frantically denied it, trying to escape.
John gripped her arm tightly.
“Then tell me, what did we say to each
other?”
I remembered the person saying to me: Thank
you. I’ll save lives just like you someday.
Lily froze.
She looked and sounded like me, it was easy
to impersonate me.
<
But she didn’t know what John had said.
John’s eyes widened. He threw his phone and
glass on the floor, kicking open the door and
yelling, “The wedding is off!”
The camera followed him as he ran outside
and hailed a cab.
The city’s best doctor was about to make
headlines.
He burst into my hospital room, sweating.
“Emily!”
John fell to his knees.
“I was wrong!”
“I’m sorry.”
“I messed up.”
“I was tricked, I was blind.”
“Emily?”
John called my name tentatively again.
He’d come so quickly, he didn’t notice the
machine next to me.
The numbers were flatlining.
I didn’t get to see him grovel and beg for
forgiveness.
“Emily?” John hesitated, calling again.
I didn’t respond.
“Emily, don’t scare me. Emily, Emily?”
John’s voice rose, his face pale.
He tried to hold my hand, but it slipped away.
“Emily? It’s me, I’m back. Open your eyes,
look at me. I was wrong, I’m here to confess.”
But no matter how much he called, I remained
