The Cage of Lies

Chapter

My husband, Jason, faked amnesia to get his girlfriend, Brittany, promoted to vice president -and to get rid of me

I overheard Brittany say, Aren’t you worried your wife won’t forgive you for this?”

Jason shrugged it off, It’s just a little game for a week. Then I’ll claim my memory’s back. She can’t blame a sick guy, right?”

I froze, but didn’t expose him

The next day, at the board meeting, Jason slammed his fist on the table. He declared

Brittany his wife and demanded I leave the company, handing over all my projects. Every employee watched, waiting for me to

stop his ridiculous tantrum

I didn’t resist. I quietly signed the resignation

papers

He didn’t know the project deadline was only

seven days away, and the client only worked

with me, the key personnel

In seven days, he wouldn’t get what he

wanted. Instead, he’d face a massive lawsuit

and jail time

You can leave, but you have to delete all

client and colleague contacts. They’re

company resources, not yours!Brittany

stopped me as I was leaving

Years of managing the company taught me that there was no such rule. She was

targeting me

I turned to Jason: Is this your idea too?”

Jason stared at me, then coldly nodded

If I deleted those contacts, there would be no turning back

He was sure I wouldn’t leave, so he was being

aggressive

And he wasn’t wrong

Jason and I had been married for seven years, childless. The company was like our child, and I cherished it more than he did. I worked

tirelessly, never slacking off

Last week, he proposed promoting Brittany to head of tech. Most of the older staff, wanting to curry favor, praised Brittany despite her obvious lack of experience, and it passed. Only I, seeing Brittany’s incompetence, had voted against Jason’s proposal, ignoring his embarrassment

He knew I’d never tolerate his schemes. To

get Brittany what she wanted, he resorted to

this ridiculous amnesia act, forcing my hand. Seeing us arguing, colleagues tried to

intervene: Mrs. Evans, please calm down. Mr. Evans is just sick. As his wife, you need to be understanding and patient.”

Empowered, Jason declared, My wife is the queen of this company! Anyone who messes with her is messing with me!”

The colleagues chuckled, teasing me, See, Mrs. Evans, your husband loves you. He’s just sick and mistook someone else for you.”

Their envious looks didn’t make me happy

The truth was the opposite

Jason and I were respectful, but whenever a problem arose, he pressured me to

compromise. He always opposed me

regardless of right or wrong

We fought a lot

He’d always say, You’re family. We can make

up at home, no matter what happens outside. But it’s different with others; once angry

there’s no going back.”

I felt uncomfortable, but eventually agreed. Seeing him abandon principles for Brittany, I understood. True love means protecting someone when they’re hurt, not coldly

calculating the pros and cons

Brittany kicked over my chair

Eleanor Evans, you shameless old woman

Brittany is his wife! If you say another word
