Carol almost had a heart attack. Kevin’s
sisters screamed. I tried to stay calm and
said, “We called the cops because we ran out
of money. But they’re getting us the money
now! Ten million! You’ll get every penny!
Please, don’t hurt him!”
The kidnappers grunted. “One more day. If
you don’t get the money, next time the knife’s
going somewhere else.”
The video ended.
Thirteen:
Carol begged the cops. “Was my daughter-
in–law telling the truth? Are you really getting the money? Please, save my son!”
Of course, it was a lie.
If the government paid for every kidnapping,
the country would be broke. The cop gave me
a look. I jumped in. “Mom, that’s not true. I
just wanted to buy us some time. Seeing
Kevin like that was killing me!”

Amy calmed down a little. She helped Carol
up and said, “What are you going to do?
Where are you going to get ten million?”
I thought about it. “The five million in the
bank is frozen, but the cops can help us get
- it. So, we just need another five million.”
Her sister, Beth, frowned. “Easy for you to
say. Do you have any money? We already sold
the houses. You want us to sell our bodies?”
Tiffany was quiet, probably thinking. I knelt.

That made Tiffany look even worse. The two

being held.

cave.

to the hospital.
