The kidnappers were already stressed. When
they saw Kevin trying to escape, they
snapped. They cut his tendons. The doctors
said the infection was so bad they couldn’t
reattach them. He would be in a wheelchair
for the rest of his life.
Before Carol and I could get to him; Tiffany
ran over. “Kevin, you’re back! It’s all my fault!
Hit me! Yell at me!”
I smirked. Kevin probably wanted to hit her,
but he could only move his lips.
Kevin couldn’t hit her, but Carol could. She
tried to kill Tiffany. I looked at Kevin. He
looked a little sad. He was probably blaming
- me.
I wouldn’t let Kevin hate me. I yelled at Carol.
“Mom, stop it! Kevin’s crippled! Tiffany’s
carrying your only grandchild! Do you want to
kill your grandson, too?”
The room went silent.
Tiffany knelt on the floor, crying. “It’s all my
fault. I’ll kill myself after the baby’s born. I’ll
pay for what I’ve done.“.
Kevin remembered Tiffany killing herself last
time and looked softened. In the end, they
decided to let Tiffany have the baby.
Sixteen:
After that, Tiffany and Kevin moved into a
new house bought with the ransom money.
Carol and Kevin guilt–tripped me into quitting
my job and taking care of them.
Everyone thought I was an idiot.
People pointed and whispered when I went to
the store.
“That’s the idiot whose husband cheated and
got crippled. And she’s still with him.”
“That’s not all. She’s taking care of the
mistress!”
“Yeah, she’s going all out. The best maid

couldn’t do better. She’s a moron.”
:
I ignored them. I kept taking care of Kevin
and Tiffany.
Kevin was touched. More than once, he cried
and told me, “Honey, I messed up so badly.
You’re so good. I cheated on you and blamed
you for getting killed. I’m so sorry.”
“Thank God I got a second chance. Don’t
worry. After the baby’s born, we’re kicking
Tiffany out. Then, we’ll be a family.”
When I heard those things, I pretended not to
understand. I just nodded. “Honey, what are
you talking about? You didn’t kill me. I’m
fine.”
“It’s my fault. If I’d had money, you wouldn’t
have gotten hurt.”
I acted so pathetic that Tiffany even felt bad.
She thought she shouldn’t have broken up my
marriage.
Time passed.
Finally, Tiffany went into labor.
Because she’d been too scared to go out for
months and couldn’t stop eating, she was fat
like Kevin. She had to have a C–section.
I pushed Kevin and Carol to the door and
waited. Finally, the doctor came out.
Carol ran over. “Doctor, is it a grandson or a
granddaughter?”
The doctor looked strange. He hesitated and
said, “It’s a boy.”
Seventeen:
Carol snatched the baby from the doctor and
looked at Kevin. “Kevin, you have a son! It’s
your heir! Our family’s going to continue!”
Kevin was happy. After the last six months, he
didn’t hate Tiffany anymore. He said, “Mom,
you didn’t like Tiffany before. But she saved
our family.”
“Yes, yes,” Carol said, glaring at me. “She’s a
hundred times better than this chicken who
couldn’t lay an egg.”
I wanted to look at the baby. Kevin yelled,
“Get away from him! Did you really think I’d
let you have this kid? I was using you to take
care of me. I asked the doctor. I can still have
kids with IVF. I’m going to divorce you and be
with Tiffany so we can have more kids.”
Carol agreed.
I wasn’t surprised. Kevin cried to me a lot, but
he wasn’t sincere.
He was scared. He worried that I might have
remembered everything. He only told me I’d
been killed to test me.
I knew him. He still blamed me. Plus, when I
went out to buy groceries, Tiffany would turn
him against me, saying she’d take care of
him.
I wiped away some tears. “I took care of the
baby for so long. Can I at least see him?”
Carol showed me the baby. Everyone went
silent. Because the baby wasn’t black–ish. He
was Black.
Eighteen:
My final move had worked.
Last time, Tiffany killed herself, and I thought
it was weird. I investigated and found out she
was promiscuous and slept with a lot of guys.
And Kevin had low sperm count.
I was sure Kevin wasn’t the father.
I was stupid. I just wanted to save my family. I
didn’t want Kevin to be fooled. I didn’t want
Tiffany to contact Kevin anymore.
I told Tiffany I knew everything. Tiffany was
distraught. She had an STD. That’s why she
killed herself. But she left a note blaming
Kevin for the kidnapping.
That’s why I made sure Tiffany had the baby. I
wanted Kevin to be ruined.
Kevin passed out when he saw the baby.
He was dead.
For the past six months, I’d been feeding
Kevin and Tiffany good food but putting pig
feed in it. Kevin’s cardiovascular system gave
out.
The shock gave him a stroke. He died. Carol
couldn’t handle it. She had a stroke and
ended up in a cheap nursing home
After having the baby, Tiffany was arrested.
She wasn’t arrested before because she was
pregnant. Now that the baby was born, she
was treated like a criminal.
As Kevin’s wife, I legally inherited everything. I
looked at the money in my account and the
new house. I happily raised my glass to
Kevin’s picture.
“Honey, people said I should have divorced
you.”
“But I always thought dying in a relationship
was better than a divorce.”
