Liam immediately became obedient.
Chloe sighed and tried to persuade me.
“Jenny, don’t be stubborn, it’s pointless.
You’ll only end up humiliated.”
“I know you always wanted to marry Liam,
but he doesn’t feel the same way, why do you
have to force him?”
“Girls should be self–reliant and have their
own careers. How many men can tolerate
your behavior?”
Chloe’s words were ostensibly meant to be
helpful,
but subtly implied that I was dependent on
men and unable to stand on my own.
The onlookers and the livestream exploded.
They accused me of being a homewrecker,
knowing they were a couple and still trying to
force a marriage.
[She’s jealous of others and is deliberately
creating this mess!]
[Someone needs to get rid of this
troublemaker! Isn’t her dad going to jail? Why
not lock her up too!]
[Chloe is a true strong independent woman,
because of people like her, the lives of
women won’t be better!]
Everyone praised Chloe, calling her an
independent and enlightened woman. They
called me a clinging vine, shaming all women.
The situation was getting too big, the
television station arrived. Reporters pressed
me, asking if I thought my actions were
shaming women.
I knew the less I said the better.
I just needed to wait for Cole to arrive and
get the marriage license to end this.
But they clearly didn’t want to let me off the
hook.
<
They used this opportunity to bring up my
family’s bankruptcy, smearing my dad’s name.
They said they would investigate my family’s
taxes.
I couldn’t take it anymore, just as I was about
to speak, a rotten egg hit my white wedding
dress.
Then another, and another…
My white dress turned yellowish–brown, the
foul–smelling egg yolk slowly dripping down.
The next second, an old man rushed over with
a bucket of dirty water, saying I had disrupted
his grandson’s marriage registration and
angrily poured it over my head.
Liam quickly hugged Chloe, afraid I would
dirty her.
Before I could react,
a warm, broad body enveloped me, shielding
me from all the filth.
I looked up and saw Cole’s stern face.
“I’ll see who dares to touch her!”
“Cole.”
“Don’t be afraid, I’m here.”
Chapter 2
Cole’s voice was low and gentle, a
tenderness he’d never shown me before.
My heart settled. I knew that as long as he
was here, no one could hurt me.
Cole’s arrival ignited the scene. The
livestream chat exploded, asking who the tall,
handsome man was.
Cole had only returned to the country two
years ago and kept a low profile, rarely
appearing in the media, so few people knew
him.
But he and Liam were sworn enemies.
Seeing Cole actually arrive, Liam’s face
turned grim. Seeing me in Cole’s arms, his
eyes darkened.
“Cole, seriously? Picking up my trash?”
<
Fat Tony and the others were stunned. After
Liam’s words, they realized.
Yes, everyone knew about Cole and Liam’s
feud.
Cole was always arrogant and aloof. How
could he possibly like a woman Liam
rejected?
It had to be to spite Liam, to deliberately
antagonize him. That’s why he was pretending
to marry me.
The Gus were a prominent family. His parents
would never approve of him marrying
someone like me.
Fat Tony sneered:
“Mr. Gu, the woman you’re holding is
supposed to marry me today. Isn’t it
inappropriate to hold another man’s fiancée?”
“Yeah, Mr. Gu, if you’re doing this to get
back at Liam, you don’t have to go this far.
We all know you wouldn’t look twice at
<
Jenny.”
“This act, how much did Jenny pay you?
Don’t end up upsetting Liam and getting
yourself into trouble.”
The onlookers joined in.
“Exactly, handsome guy, you didn’t see how
desperate this woman is, throwing herself at
any man. Don’t let her fool you!”
“This woman is only outwardly glamorous, but
she’s really just a slut! Marry her and expect
to be cheated on!”
Even Chloe couldn’t stand it, stepping
forward, her cheeks flushed, to Cole.
“Mr. Gu, I don’t know what Jenny told you,
but she did go overboard by wearing a
wedding dress and coming to the courthouse
to force Liam into marriage.‘
“”
“Regardless, I don’t want you to be a victim
of their conflict, please go back.”
“”
“This was just a social experiment, Liam did
L
this for my story. I don’t want to involve you.
Chloe’s bright eyes looked sincere and
charming. Every move, every word was
perfectly graceful and refined.
Her words were soothing.
Everyone praised her elegant demeanor,
worthy of being a top journalist.
I just sneered, secretly glancing at Cole.
I wondered if he would be like Liam, swayed
by Chloe’s words.
I held my breath,
but Cole smiled faintly and released my hand.
My heart sank.
“News material?”
“You mean, for your pathetic professional
standards, you’d sacrifice my fiancée’s
reputation?”
“Just to use her humiliation as your news
story?”
Cole pressed, Chloe backing away.
