- me.
He said urgently and angrily, “Sarah, you need
to control your temper, where are we?!”
He worriedly took off his jacket and wrapped
it around Taylor, as if she’d suffered a great
injustice.
“What did I do?” I asked, feeling confused
and wronged.
“Still denying it? You spilled soda on Taylor,
and you think you’re right? Apologize to
Taylor!” Jake’s voice was cold, his eyes full of
reproach.
I looked at him incredulously. After eight
years, he couldn’t know me better?
Spilling drinks out of jealousy, I wouldn’t,
couldn’t do that.
Taylor, however, choked out, softly saying,
“Jake, I spilled it myself, don’t blame my
く
sister.”
My heart sank. This cliché green tea scene
from novels happened to me.
“Apologize, I said again.”
Jake poured me a shot of liquor, “Drink, show
sincerity.”
My tears welled. “Jake, you know I can’t
drink.”
He knew my stomach was sensitive.
“Really? Weren’t you drinking a lot at the
party the other day?” he said coldly.
He was referring to a company party. He had
a cold and took Cephalosporin, couldn’t drink
but the investor’s drinks couldn’t be refused.
So I drank for him.
My stomach burned that night. He had a
104°F fever and fed me water.
He promised, “Sarah, don’t drink anymore, I
can’t bear it.”
But in just a few months, he forgot.

Seeing my hesitation, Taylor cried, hiding in
Jake’s arms, “Jake, don’t pressure your
friend.”
Whispers filled the room.
I took a deep breath, and raised the liquor. “I
won’t apologize, but it’s Emily’s wedding. I’ll
drink. But Jake, after this, we’re done.”
Jake hesitated, but didn’t stop me.
I drank it down, my throat and stomach
burning.
“Let’s go, I’ll take you to change,” Jake said,
but to Taylor.
I stood there, feeling mixed emotions, but
also relief.
Perhaps, this relationship should have ended
long ago.
