I didn’t look back. I didn’t notice Daniel
glanced back at Jake, with disdain, as if looking at trash.
I’d met Daniel before, at an auction where he
bought a jewelry set I loved.
We’d met at banquets, but then I only had eyes for Jake.
Once, during my period, I sat alone in a
corner. He came to me with a drink.
He left soon, then a waiter brought me
painkillers and a heating pad.
So when Daniel appeared, I didn’t think much, perhaps to reconcile, or out of consideration for Emily. Only he could control the situation,
as Emily feared for me.
“Did you two break up?” Daniel’s voice was
low and calm, emotionless.
I nodded, expecting him to advise calm, or
speak for Jake. But his next words stunned
- me.

“Congratulations,” he said softly, then
paused, looking directly at me. “Sarah, would
you consider me?”
I was speechless, my heart racing.
The air became awkward. I felt my ears
burning.
“It’s okay, take your time,” his tone was gentle but firm. “I have plenty of patience. But now, you need to take medicine.”
I obediently opened my mouth, swallowing the hangover medicine.
My mind was a mess.
Why would he say that? Was he confessing?
We barely know each other…
I glanced up.
Our eyes met, I quickly looked away.
The day after the wedding, Emily suggested a
trip to Jade Mountain Villa.
There were hot springs and beautiful scenery.
At the hotel entrance, Jake appeared.
Beside me, he said tentatively, “It’s far to the villa, you can’t get a taxi.”
I ignored him and got into the Rolls–Royce
that arrived.
