Ignoring John and Mark, I followed Mom’s
wishes and found Zenith Group.
Before I could steady myself, a trembling
male voice called out.
“Susan? Is that you?”
I turned to see a man who looked seven-
tenths like Mom.
I whispered,
“Uncle…”
His eyes widened. He grabbed my hand,
pulling me into the company.
“You’re Susan’s daughter. Let me see you.
Where’s your mother? Why didn’t she come
with you?”
After I told him about Mom and me, his eyes
welled up.
“Wendy, I failed to take care of your mother.”
He pulled out a key chain and a card he
always carried.
“This card is from your grandmother, for your
mother. It includes years of company
dividends
one million dollars. Future
dividends will be deposited into this account.”
<
“This house belonged to your mother. Now
it’s yours.”
My eyes widened.
“Wendy, your mother is gone, but I’ll be your
support. Come to me if you need anything.”
My eyes welled up. I nodded vigorously.
“Okay.”
Following the address Uncle gave me, I found
Mom’s house.
As I arrived with the building manager, a
woman’s voice sneered.
“Oh, look, a poor cleaner made it here.”
“Auntie Grace, this villa’s security is getting
worse, letting anyone in. What if someone
steals something?”
Lily and Grace walked over, sneering
condescendingly.
Grace gently adjusted her hair and spoke
disdainfully.
“Didn’t you say your mother was critical? Why
are you here instead of by her side?”
“John said you asked for twenty thousand
dollars last time. Is this enough?”
Grace pulled out a wad of cash, waving it in.
the air.
“Pick it up, use it to treat your mother.”
Grace and Lily laughed.
“Ladies, you’re mistaken. Ms. Wang is not our
cleaning staff.”
“She…”
I interrupted the manager.
“It’s none of your business. This isn’t your
house. Leave.”
“You, cleaner…”
Before Lily finished, someone stopped her.
Mark looked tired, his surprise evident.
“Mark, why are you here? Look, Wendy can’t
possibly afford a villa this big. She must have
found a sugar daddy!”
Seeing Mark, Lily clung to him.
Mark stepped aside, looking at me in surprise.
“Wendy, you came to find me?”
“I knew you wouldn’t want a divorce. Dad and
I have reflected. We were wrong to lie about
our poverty.”
“To compensate you, Dad will buy you and
Mom a house in the next district.”
“You know, Mom living here is inconvenient.”
Mark glanced awkwardly at Grace.
“Mark, why didn’t you discuss buying a house
with me?”
“Susan wouldn’t like such a big villa. She
works hard every day; it would be
troublesome for her.”
Grace complained.
Lily nodded in agreement.
But Mark ignored them, looking at me.
I shook my head and chuckled.
“No need, Mark.”
