I said coldly,
“What am I doing? Isn’t the divorce paper
clear enough?”
“And John, you have no right to mention my
mother!”
“Get this bitch out of my mother’s grave.”
I pointed at Grace.
John didn’t believe me, frowning.
“Wendy, don’t joke about your mother.”
“She’s just angry. She clearly had a
transplant, she can’t be dead.”
Grace put on a gentle act.
“Yes, Wendy, your father planned a trip for
your mother.”
“He knows she’s upset ”
<
“He’s been frantic, looking for her.”
“Bring your mother out.”
I laughed.
“John, you killed Mom.”
“I called you that day, Mom needed $20,000
for surgery, but you thought we were
scamming you and hung up.”
“Mom died of kidney failure.”
John was stunned.
Grace insisted.
“Impossible. Don’t lie to your father.”
“Your mother was strong, how could she die
of organ failure?”
“The transplant was for your mother.”
John was reassured.
“Right, she had surgery. She won’t die. Bring
her out.”
I showed him the diagnosis and transplant
records.
“John, look, who had the surgery!”
John finally believed me.
He trembled, eyes red with disbelief.
“Wendy, your mother…”
“Stop it, John. Don’t pretend to care. If it
weren’t for you, Mom wouldn’t be dead.”
“Get out of here.”
John was shocked, shaking his head.
“Impossible. Susan wouldn’t leave me, not
even a last look?”
“She loved me!”
He fainted.
My uncle’s security guards arrived.
I had them remove them, repaired Mom’s tombstone, and replaced the offerings.
Mark looked complicated, wanting to speak.
He took John to the hospital.
Afterward, Uncle and returned to the house.
Seeing the decor, my heart ached.
Everything was Mom’s favorite.
Uncle said,
<
“Your grandmother hired someone to design
this house based on your mother’s
preferences. She hoped your mother would return.”
“Your grandmother wanted to see your
mother one last time.”
“But…”
“Perhaps, they’ve reunited.”
I whispered.
