Chapter 5
But it was too late, Lilis’s hand moved too fast.
The swaddling cloth fell away, revealing a bundle of cotton
Illis froze, staring in shock
“Wh–what what’s going on?” he stammered. “Where’s the baby?”
He rubbed his eyes in disbelief, but no matter how many times he looked, there was nothing there but a block of cotton
I folded my arms and watched him with a calm smile.
“Your child? 1 aborted it a long time ago,” I said quietly.
“Did you really think I went to the hospital a few months ago for no reason?”
“Ellis, you always claimed to care about me, said you felt betrayed by me, but if you had cared even half as much about me as you did about Jenifer, you would have noticed something was wrong”
Though I smiled mockingly, my heart was filled with a bitter ache
Once upon a time, I had truly loved Ellis. Otherwise, I wouldn’t have willingly given up a promising future for him, even when my superiors told me I was being foolish
Back then, I believed that retuming to the family life would bring me warmth and happiness,
I worked hard to play the role of a good wife, cooking for him, taking care of his daily needs.
But in the end, all my love and efforts meant nothing to Ellis. To him, they were no different from trash.
Ellis stood there silently, staring blankly at the bundle of cotton, lost in thought
Maybe he thought I was on cruel.
After all, when he first found out I was pregnant, he had been genuinely excited about the baby
But now, it was all too late.
The Defense Intelligence Agency officers took them both away. Since I was still technically Ellis’s wife, I was taken along as well to cooperate with the Investigation.
Before leaving, Hailes, who had been crying and howling on the floor about how I had disgraced the Glen family, suddenly tried to grab onto me
Gone was her usual superiority. In front of everyone, she dropped to her knees.
“Maryan, I was wrong! I misunderstood you! Please, for the sake of our family, don’t say anything reckless during the investigation!” she begged.
By kneeling to her daughter–in–law, she put me in a very awkward position
If I had been a soft–hearted person, I might have been guilt–tripped into agreeing
But I had never been someone with a weak temperament
“When you were cursing me at the hospital, did you remember we were family?” Tasked coldly. “Ch right, weren’t you the one who wanted me executed? Now you remember we’re family?”
My sarcasm made Hailee’s face contort in fury.
Still, for her precious son’s sake, the swallowed her pride and clung to my log
“It’s all Jenifer’s fault!” she sobbed. “That shameless little tramp! She must have come up with this vile scheme!”
“Maryan, you know Ellis–he’s always been honest, the youngest colonel in the unid! He can’t afford to have a stain like this on his record!”
Her cries sounded far more sincere than her earlier insults.
Unfortunately, I was utterly uninoved.
“Ellis is an adult,” I said calmly. “He should have known the consequences of his actions. If the Defense Intelligence Agency asks me anything, I will only tell the truth.”
Hearing this, Hailee scrambled up from the floor and started pointing at me, shrieking.
