Xander POV
My evening is spent going from one post to another, yes I know everything is secure but I need to see it for myself. I need to see which Gamma are at each post so I can ensure it’s held strong.
The men who I sent out to gather information have still not returned and that worries me. They’ve been silent, there’s been no communication except them saying they would be back today. Well, today is passing by quickly and they aren’t here. Sighing, I walk back to the pack house. As I step inside, I look around. Killian stands leaning against the wall.
“Still not returned, I’m hoping that means they went into those packs we haven’t heard from on the way and are getting answers.”
He thinks that, but I have an uneasy feeling. “Rogues are unpredictable.”
“You’re the one who knows them the most, so if you think that, I will agree.”
Sitting down, he joins me.
“What is the plan now, as she’s your mate. You claimed her, I saw the mark.”
My plan hasn’t changed. “I still do it. I destroy his entire pack, rip it apart, leave nothing, and hand it over to the rogues like I agreed I would.”
Killian nods slowly. “I understand your need to punish him and the pack, I don’t disagree with that, but I think there’s a risk if you give it to the rogues.”
He doesn’t understand. “You realise, without the rogues, without their help, I wouldn’t have gotten this far? They let me play the part, like I’m one of them, they agree to say I am because they know when this ends, they get his pack”
“And the ones who don’t care about your plans?”
“I kill them all if they so much as speak of what I’m planning.”
Sighing, he rubs his face. I get it, there are a lot of risks. Rogues are unpredictable. At any moment, they could make a deal with another pack, throw me to the wolves, so to speak. The rogues who know what I’m doing and aren’t involved could also change things.
I’m not willing to let this go though. I will get revenge on Gideon for what he did.
“Do you believe her stories?” He looks at me and waits.
“I’m beginning to believe them more, yes. She had no idea what Heat was, she has no idea about anything.”
His head tilts. “She has to have felt Heat before.”
“Not when he rules his pack in a way that stops it. She told me all the Omegas are basically bound from instinct, from their wolves, until they find a mate. The entire pack is at risk.” That’s my biggest worry right now, how many wolves in that pack are bound, and about to break free?
Drugging a wolf into submission only lasts so long before the wolf goes mad and begins to kill everyone. “I will take down Gideon and anyone who is close to him, or who supports him. The others will be offered a place here.” They have been punished for no reason.
“And those who did wrong by Serafine?”
“Did they?” I ask, still feeling unsure and my wolf burns me from inside. “Anyone who had hurt her dies.” That settles my wolf. He believes her stories, all of them. I do to some extent but something doesn’t add up.
Gideon put her on sale, he didn’t mention she was untouched by a man, a bond everything. He could have gotten far more for her. So I feel like he wanted me to buy her, which means, he either knows the truth or he’s planning to use me being a rogue for an advantage.
A part of me suspects she is that plan. She knows he sold her to me for information.
“So you’re going to destroy their home and offer a new one?”
“I’m going to offer them a life, without him drugging them, and withholding their wolves like they should be ashamed of not having a mate! If what she said is true…” I stop, and my wolf burns me again for doubting her. “If it’s true…” I grit out. “Then a man who can do that to his daughter, I have no doubt he does far worse to those in his pack who aren’t his blood.” Killian nods. “Everyone knew what Gideon was like, the type of monster he the moment he killed Eva without cause.”
Successfully unlocked!
Which he will regret. At that moment, I wasn’t Apha I was barely twenty but I spent my entire time making sure he wouldn‘
t know I was linked to this pack, the pack where Eva came from.
“This bond feels different,” I say quietly, and he looks at me.
“How?”
Bond
My shoulders shrug. “Last time, it was a slow build, and I had the power to control it. This, I’m losing my power entirely to it. I feel like something inside of me has shifted. I’m not sure what.”
Killian leans forward. “Sometimes, first mates were never destined to stay. They were created and here for a purpose.” “You’re saying Eva’s purpose was to be murdered?” My words are loud, and he holds his hands up.
“No, I’m saying…” He stops and glares at me. “You know what, yes I am! Someone has to say it. Notice something? If Eva didn’t die by Gideon, you wouldn’t have found Serafine, as you wouldn’t have bought her for revenge! You wouldn’t have found her as your mate. Everything would be different.”
I should kill him for speaking to me like that, but I don’t, because maybe he’s right, even if I don’t want to accept it. Sighing. I stand. “I’m getting some sleep. That’s what I say when really my wolf is pacing in my mind wanting to be near Serafine. So I give in to it and walk to her bedroom.
She’s asleep when I walk in. As I step closer, she wakes and nods.
“I’m not here for that,” I whisper before stripping and climbing into bed with her. The moment I hold her, my wolf settles. He doesn’t like me thinking about Eva anymore, which I also don’t understand.
