Gregory’s face fell. He was going to be upset. I knew how much he disliked employees who did not listen to him. The family had a lot of wealth in this city, and a lot of people were after them.
I was never allowed to go out as I pleased, and I was mostly homeschooled. Outside food was forbidden unless they could verify where it came from. They were worried their competitors might poison our food.
However, one of my teachers took pity on me and thought it was unfair that I was locked up in a prison of a manor and never got to see the world, so she decided to skive. We went to an amusement park, and it was packed.
She got me some cotton candy on the way, conveniently forgetting that Gregory had warned her not to take me out as she pleased. That cotton candy was poisoned. I was knocked out and kidnapped.
My parents and Gregory were mad with worry. Even when they found me and took me to the hospital, I was a hair’s breadth away from death.
The bodyguard’s attitude was getting on Gregory’s nerves. He was about to blow up, but Annabelle came forth and squeezed a smile.
“You worry too much, Mr. Leafenstein. Only the most important figures are worth your concern. You shouldn’t be here. I can promise you that the bodyguard was just teaching his employee a lesson. He ignored his captain’s orders and talked back to him. That warrants a lesson.”
The Leafensteins would never hire bodyguards who would defy their employers, but Gregory was in a hurry to look for me, so he decided not to press that question.
Someone stuffed my mouth with toilet wipes, and I couldn’t say a word. All I could do was wriggle and make some noise.
‘I’m here! Look at me!‘ I thought.
Right before Gregory left, he turned around, but instead of coming toward me, his attention was on Wendy, who was in another room. He told his men to pick her up. “What happened to her?” She was unconscious.
He asked, “And where’s the man who was with her?”
He must’ve remembered what I told him during the call. He knew I was with Wendy. However, my phone died right after the call ended, so he couldn’t get in touch with me since then.
Annabelle hesitated for a moment before she answered, “We didn’t see anyone.” Just to make sure of something, she asked, “Who is that man to you? Perhaps we can help?”
Gregory said nothing. My family would act like they did not know me whenever we were outside. It was a form of protection for me. Even during the rescue, it was Gregory’s secretary who came to the scene. Most bodyguards could only stay outside, so they didn’t see my face.
He told his men to take Wendy away, and this time, he left without any hesitation.
I pushed myself as hard as I could and reached a chair, then I nudged it. The chair screeched.
