“Wait. Isn’t he that rich heir from the Chesson family? I remember now. There was that news story about how he flew straight to a disaster zone to rescue a woman. Looking back, she didn’t seem like his girlfriend, more like a side piece.”
“I know him. He used to be a professor. His wife’s not the one in those headlines. His real wife is a badass traditional medicine practitioner. Her last name’s
Sinclair.”
As the angry voices grew louder, Sebastian sat in pure agony, his heart full of regret and pain. All he wanted was to throw himself into the fire and die with me. But before he could, the Chesson family arrived and dragged him away to face Wayne.
A hard slap landed on his face. Sebastian didn’t even flinch. He just sat there numbly.
Wayne sneered coldly. “Do you’regret it now? What happened to appreciating her when you had the chance?”
“Grandpa… Tess is dead… It’s my fault. I killed her…”
Sebastian gripped his head, letting out an animalistic wail of grief and madness. He kneeled and groveled, smashing his head to the floor over and over.
“Please, Grandpa. Let me at least collect her remains… I can’t let her lie there all alone. I’m begging you!”
Wayne couldn’t take watching him anymore. He slapped Sebastian again. “What the hell are you wailing about? Tessa isn’t dead.”
At those words, Sebastian’s eyes lit up, , then immediately dimmed again, bitter and hollow. “Don’t lie to me, Grandpa.”
Wayne tossed the divorce papers at him. “Even if she were dead, you wouldn’t be the one to collect her body. You two are already divorced.”
“I would never divorce Tess!”
Wayne laid it all out for Sebastian. He told the latter about the deal I had made with him. Then he showed him the last message I sent before boarding my flight.
Sebastian opened the message and read it.
“Sebastian, I tried for three years. I don’t know what I did wrong to make you hate me so much. I’ve used up all my love and burned through every ounce of pride. I slammed into every wall. I’ve let go of every bit of resentment and accepted my loss.
“From the cracks you left me in, I learned that you were only ever capable of surviving hard times, never sharing good ones. Sebastian, I’m not guilty at all. The problem lies with you. You broke your promises, and you were the first to let go.”
“No!” Tears poured from Sebastian’s eyes like rain. “Tess. You were always the one I loved most!”
