I instinctively looked over at Jax, I saw sadness wash over him, but he quickly composed himself. However, I could see him struggling to answer. I was pissed off. There was no doubt the princes knew, every death of an alpha and Luna was reported to the kingdom. If they knew he had a mate, that also meant they knew he had lost her as well. Why were they being so insensitive? My anger got the best of me as usual. Gripping Jax’s hand, I gave him a small smile, then looked at the twins, well, glared at them.
“With all due respect, your highnesses, if you knew Jax had a mate and you must’ve also known of his Luna’s death, or is the castle’s archive not up to date?” I said, trying my best to keep my voice calm.
Jax and Alana looked at me, stupified that I had questioned the princes, our to–be kings and rulers. But, at that moment, I didn’t care, how could they be insensitive regarding someone’s feelings? Some rulers they would be, I internally scoffed. Looking at them, I thought I would see the rage in their eyes at the blatant disrespect, but instead, I saw them glaring daggers at mine and Jax’s conjoined hands. I didn’t know why but I let it go insistently.
Confused!
Why the hell did I do that?
Feeling me jolt out of his hold, Jax returned to his senses and looked towards the princes, giving them a small smile.
“I was your highness, my fated mate and Luna was killed during a- rogue attack. Lyla and I have known each other since childhood. She’s my chosen mate. We will be mating next month on her eighteenth

birthday.” Said Jax, as he smiled at me.
I feebly smiled back. Even though I was pissed at the twins, Jax admitting all of this to them had my stomach turn.
What the hell was happening to me?
Unconsciously, I looked towards the twins and saw their rage–filled eyes on Jax.
Lyla POV:
Unconsciously, I looked towards the twins and saw their rage–filled eyes on Jax. Alana cut them off as soon as the twins opened their mouths to say something.
“Oh, you’re not eighteen yet, though. What if you find your mate once you turn eighteen, since you’ll still be at the academy at the time.” She said.
Jax and I both stilled. We had never had this conversation before; it was kind of an unsaid thought. I had always wanted to be with him, and everyone knew, so the perception of me rejecting my mate was already like an unsaid commitment. However, the thought of rejecting the other half of my soul was becoming gut–wrenching as time passed and I got closer to my birthday, but I didn’t tell anyone that. I didn’t have it in me to tell Jax this. With how much love and support he has shown me, and even if my brothers and I had drifted apart over the years, I still didn’t want them to be disappointed in me. I knew they wouldn’t be if I told them. Still, the guilt of straining their friendship with their best friends and two of their most trusted allies didn’t sit well with me. And, who knew, maybe I was one of those unlucky wolves that never found their mate. I would take a chosen then anyway, right? As much as I tried convincing myself, I was beginning to think it wasn’t working like it used to.

“If that was the case and Lyla wanted to be with the guy, I would let her go even though it would break my heart because Lyla is a diamond in a bunch of coal.” Said Jax, giving my cheek a peck.
I genuinely smiled at him this time.
I knew whatever he said, he meant it, that he would let me go if I wanted it, but could I break him like that? That was the real question and task?
“Well, we’ll have to wait and see.” Said one of the princes.
Jax and I just smiled at him, unsure what to say to that.
“It was a pleasure meeting you, Alpha Jax and you as well, Lyla. We’ll leave you guys to the party now. Have fun.” Said the other prince.
Even though they had bid their goodbyes, they both still lingered a bit, staring at me with emotions swirling in their eyes. They turned and left. and gave Jax a curt nod and a once over to me.
Weird much!
“I’m going to go meet up with your brothers, sweetheart. You go and socialize with your new classmates. We’ll let you know once we’re about to leave,” Said Jax.
