Chapter 6 Wedding Anniversary

Hugo had been busy preparing for his wedding anniversary with Rosalie these past few days

Sylvie had called him several times, complaining of excruciating pain, saying she was about to pass out

He was too busy to attend to her, so he instructed his secretary to rush

over

A growing sense of unease spread through him, and he even called his mother, Teresa Caldwell, to attend the anniversary celebration to help smooth things over and get him back in Rosalie’s good graces

It had been two days since he’d been home. Normally, Rosalie would have bombarded him with calls and messages by now, but this time, there wasn’t a single message in his inbox

Thinking back to the image of Rosalie lying in a hospital bed, pale and fragile, Hugo felt guilty for his behavior

She had been so sick, and he had been so harsh with her, demanding that she take care of Sylvie as soon as she woke up

He suddenly pinched his own thigh in frustration, scrolling to the message he had sent her that morning, asking her to bring him some documents. The documents were just a pretexthe only wanted to surprise her

With this thought in mind, Hugo sent her another messagethis time, a voice message

Honey, I miss you so much

Why haven’t you replied yet?”

It had been a long time since he’d been this soft with her. Someone as easy to please as she should have been delighted just hearing him call her Honey, right

And besides, he had prepared the gift she had always wanted

Hugo pressed his phone off, feeling resolute, but he didn’t notice the large red exclamation mark on the message he had just sent

He was still busy arranging everything for the celebration, using Rosalie’s favorite blue hydrangeas, which looked like a rolling sea of blue

When the guests had all arrived, his mother showed up, carrying a large box in her hands. The box looked somewhat familiar, and Hugo’s heart skipped a beat when he heard his mother say

It’s from Rosalie. She had it sent here this morning. She probably wants me to give it to you.”

He took the box. It was lighter than expected

This was the first time Rosalie had sent him a gift this way for all these years. Normally, she would present the gift to him in person or have someone else deliver it

He sighed lightly, feeling inexplicably impatient, and then called his secretary over

Has Rosalie not arrived yet? Send someone to the villa to check on her

Make sure the makeup artist is on standby. She doesn’t like wearing makeup, but today is important. She must look beautiful!he added. As if on instinct, he looked toward the door anxiously, but it was not Rosalie whom he saw

Instead, he saw Sylvie slowly wheel herself in

The sight of her made Hugo feel a surge of frustration

This was supposed to be his wedding anniversary with Rosaliewhat was this woman doing here? He had specifically told the secretary not to send her an invitation and kept everything under wraps. How had she managed to show up

But the next moment, what Sylvie said made his face change drastically

Hugo, what do you take me for? On your wedding anniversary with Rosalie, you had her bring me the invitation. Are you trying to humiliate me?”

Rosalie? Why her?he thought, stunned

He had kept everything under wraps so well, only planning to surprise her

Hugo furrowed his brow, his fists clenched tightly

Just then, the secretary rushed in, hurrying to whisper in his ear

Mr. Caldwell, something’s wrong

There’s no sign of Mrs. Caldwell at the house, and we haven’t been able to find out which car she got into!”
