Chapter 1 I Want A Divorce

“We should get a divorce, Xavier.” Winona Moore’s hand trembled when she said this.

She kept thinking about how Christine Patterson, Xavier Patterson’s younger sister, laughed at her. “Xavier married you just because you sound like Eliza Scott, who grew up with him. If you’ve got any pride, quit stealing him from Eliza. He just saw you as a substitute for her. Now she has come back and they’re celebrating her birthday together tonight. He’ll definitely divorce you!”

It finally dawned on her that he stayed out overnight to celebrate another woman’s birthday, and the only reason he married her was because her voice sounded like that woman’s. No wonder he always said she had a pleasant voice repeatedly. It must have reminded him of that woman.

Xavier stared at Winona and said in an unhappy tone, “What did you say?”

Winona pursed her lips and looked at him with a determined look. “I want a divorce.” She took out her suitcase and started to pack her things up quickly, looking urgent.

Xavier’s face darkened. He grabbed her wrist and said, “You begged me to marry you back then.”

His hold was so tight it hurt. She had never thought he married her out of pity. Suddenly, she felt deeply humiliated and regretful.

She gritted her teeth and asked, “Then divorce is a relief to you, isn’t it?”

The reason for their marriage was quite simple.

Winona had clung to the hope that if she played her role perfectly as his wife, he would grow on her. But she realized now how naïve she had been.

She stared at him with tears in her eyes. Xavier squinted and suddenly let go of her.

“Do you know what divorce means to you?” he asked.

Winona didn’t speak, her face turning pale.

He continued, “Once you leave this house, you’re no longer Mrs. Patterson. According to the agreement we signed before our marriage, you won’t get a penny from the Patterson family, and you’ll live a tough life from then on.”

“So what? No one knows that I used to be your wife,” Winona replied.

Tears finally ran down her face after she got in a taxi. She wiped them away, looking determined.

Xavier was alone in the villa, feeling pissed. Hearing his phone’s ringing, he picked it up.

“Are you home, Xavier?” It was Christine.

“Yes.” Xavier stood up to put out his cigarette.

“Now that Eliza has come back, when are you gonna divorce Winona?” Christine asked anxiously on the phone.

Hearing the word “divorce”, Xavier said in a displeased tone, “When did I say that I’m divorcing her?”

Christine paused, glanced at the woman next to her, and said through gritted teeth, “I know you married her because she…”

“It’s none of your business,” Xavier interrupted her coldly. Just as he was about to hang up, he heard a familiar voice. “Are you still mad at me, Xavier?”

Xavier fell silent when he heard Eliza. He twiddled the bracelet that Winona had forgotten to take away on the coffee table and said, “It’s late. Good night.” Then he hung up the phone.

“Hello? Xavier?” Christine looked at her phone in shock and said in disbelief, “What did he mean? Does he not want to divorce Winona?”

Eliza looked at the phone with a meaningful look and said after a long pause, “Did Xavier fall in love with his wife, Christine?”

“That’s impossible!” Christine frowned. “He only married Winona because her voice reminds him of you, and you were already married. I heard it straight from him. There’s no way he’s fallen in love with Winona.”

“But…” Eliza remembered Xavier’s indifferent look when he saw her earlier tonight. She clenched her fists, feeling down, and added, “Love grows over time.”

Christine looked at her in confusion, “That’s not gonna happen. You grew up with Xavier and know him longer than Winona does. She’s nothing compared to you.”

Eliza seemed to feel much more relieved to hear that. “But he was so cold to me tonight.” Xavier treated her no differently than he treated anyone else, which was completely different from before.

Christine patted Eliza on her hand and said, “Don’t worry, Eliza. You’re the only one Xavier loves. He wouldn’t fall for someone else just because she sounds like you. After you left, he looked for you for half a year but was told that you married someone else. It’s normal for him to be distant from you. Just talk to him, and things will smooth over.”

Hearing this, Eliza lowered her head and said with a smile, “You’re right. We’ve got lots of time.”
