Chapter 12
Just then, the guard saw him and opened the gate to let Krista in.
He sure wasn’t going to mess with Terrence’s wife.
As soon as Krista walked through the gate, she spotted Emery.
“Emery,” she called out with a soft smile as she walked over.
Hearing her voice, Emery looked up, about to call out her name,
but then he remembered others might hear.
Many people thought Krista was his mom.
He ran up to her, beaming, and whispered, “Krista, why’d you
come bring me lunch?”
“I messed up breakfast and felt bad, so I got you lunch from Riverspire Bistro,” she said, giving his little head a loving pat.
Emery took the lunchbox and asked tentatively, “Are you gonna bring me lunch again?”
“Sure, tomorrow and the day after, but not the day after that!”
“Why not?”

Krista smiled, “I’m off to Southmount for a comic convention the
day after tomorrow. After that, I’m heading back to my country. I
came back mainly for convention, and I got here a few days early
to see you and your dad.”
She couldn’t stay at the school for long. After chatting with
Emery for a bit, she had to leave.
Emery felt upset about Krista leaving, so he called Terrence using
his smartwatch.
“Dad, do you know Krista is leaving in three days?”
Terrence’s gaze sharpened. “Yes.”
“Why didn’t you tell me? I don’t want her to go.”
Terrence paused for a moment. “You like her?”
“Yeah. I wish I could spend more time with her. But she said after
the comic convention in Southmount in three days, she’s flying
out of the country, and I won’t see her again for a long time.”
Terrence suddenly changed the topic. “You wanna go to
Southmount?”
Emery had been into cartoons since he was a kid, and if he went
to the convention, he could hang out with Krista.

He replied without a moment’s hesitation, “Yeah, I do!”
“I’ll book the tickets later. We’ll head to Southmount for a trip.”
Emery was over the moon. “Dad, you’re awesome!”
After hanging up, Terrence checked the time. It’d be the weekend
three days later, and Emery wouldn’t have to go back to school
after getting out the day after tomorrow.
He planned to book tickets for Saturday morning, so they could
go out together in the afternoon.
As he told Michael to book two tickets and sent him his ID
number, he suddenly remembered that Eliza had called to say that Bethany’s phone was on, but she wasn’t answering.
It made sense that she wasn’t answering, since she couldn’t talk.
But she hadn’t come back all day. Was it because he had canceled their dinner plans?
They had been married for seven years, and they had never gone out together as a family.
So, he decided to have Michael book three tickets.
But he didn’t know Bethany’s ID number, so he sent her a message: “There’s a comic convention in Southmount this

weekend, and Emery wants to go. Give me your ID number so I
can book the tickets together.”
But he got no response.
After he got home, Terrence still hadn’t heard back from
Bethany.
And she hadn’t come back.
Terrence, who was always cool as a cucumber, was starting to
feel a bit off.
Michael sent him a message to remind him that he hadn’t given
him his ID number yet.
Annoyed, he just sent his and Emery’s ID numbers.
At dinner, Emery was chatting happily with Krista.
