Chapter 62
Gwyneth got back to the Teloria Apartment.
She had already arranged for someone to bring her things upstairs. She herself took a slow walk around the block before heading
When she reached the apartment, she saw Zachary standing under a streetamp.
He was dressed in a sharp suit, but looked beaten down. His eyes were dull–until he saw her. Then they lit up.
home.
“Gwennie, I’ve been waiting for you,” he said. “I was too worked up last time at the Lopez Group, I said the wrong things and upset you, I came to say I’m sorry, 1-
Before he could finish, Gwyneth raised her hand to our him off
“I already got my revenge. You don’t owe me anything now, So shut up and leave.” With that, she walked past him without a glance.
But she hadn’t gone far when Zachary turned around and spoke again, his voice full of hope. “I know you’re not happy to see me, but I really meant to apologize.
“If we can’t go back to what we were, maybe we can start over as friends. Like when we first met.”
His deep, gentle voice stirred old memories Gwyneth couldn’t help but think of those days when their fingertips brushed under dappled shadows, the buzz of cicadas in summer, snow falling quietly in winter.
But those were nothing but memories. Her heart still ached for the past, but her mind stayed clear.
She took a deep breath, turned around, and crushed the hope in Zachary’s eyes with one sharp sentence.
“You’re not here to apologize for hurting me,” she said. “You’re here because you’re scared of losing the Lopez Group project,”
She knew h
him too well. Looking at him now, she could see every flicker of greed, every trace of guilt in the way his pinky stiffened just slightly.
She sneered. “Even your apology has strings attached. Don’t act like there’s any real sincerity left in you.
“And seriously–you think I’m Harrison’s mistress, you look down on me, and yet here you are, begging for a deal. I didn’t think it was possible, but you’ve sunt even lower in just a few days.”
Every word stabbed straight into Zachary’s chest. His face turned pale, but he couldn’t argue back. It felt like Gwyneth’s words had knocked the wind right out of him, even bent his spine a little.
The streetlight cast a cold glow on both of them. Wind tossed Gwyneth’s hair as she turned to go
Then a voice cut through the air. “Gwyneth, how can a homewrecker like you accuse Zachary of that?”
Bella suddenly appeared behind her, stepping in front of Zachary, Her eyes were reddened. “Zachary just wanted to honor your thirteen years together. He didn’t expect to get back together–just to end things peacefully. How could you twist it like that?”
Trouble never came alone. Gwyneth fel a headache coming on–another face she didn’t want to sec
“Whether he used me to climb up to the Lopez Group–he knows that better than anyone.” And with that, she swiped her card and walked into the building.
Behind her, Zachary dropped his gaze, guilt written all over his face.
Gwyneth hadn’t even stepped into the elevator when she heard a beep behind her. To her surprise, Zachary and Bella had followed her in, which left her a bit confused
