Chapter 5
I watched as Darren struggled for his life, tapping on Karl’s hand as hard as he could but Karl didn’t seem like he was letting him go anytime soon
I realized if I didn’t intervene, he would probably end up dead.
fnt hurt
anyway! I knew it was
“Stop! You’re going to hurt him!” I yelled on top of my voice. Did I really just say that? Why did I care if that bastard got just from instinct but I didn’t want to see him dead.
My voice caught Karl’s attention and he immediately let go of Darren, coming to my side and assisting me to my feet. “are you okay!” He asked me, concern laced in his voice.
I was astonished by his level of care but I only nodded fast, my in his lungs.
eyes
yes still fixed on Darren who by now was coughing so hard, trying to regain the air
Still holding my hand, he turned to look at Darren who instantly flinched, raising his trembling hands in defeat. Not peeling his gaze off him, Karl directed to me, is this the house you need to pick your items from!”
“Yes,” 1 said, still in awe by everything unraveling.
“Go in there, bring every single thing that belongs to her, she’ll confirm that it’s all complete, he let go of me, inching closer to a cowered Darren, Jif she claims one thing’s missing, this time, you’ll be paying for it in a cell, locked where no one will remember you exist, do you get me?” His voice
was calm. Too calm for the situation.
Darren nodded fast, hurrying inside the house to do just as he’d been ordered.
Karl turned back to me, “are you okay?”
I simply nodded, completely lost for words at this point.
Then that’s good,” he said to reassure me.
Darren returned with two bags filled with the rest of my belongings. Layla didn’t peek out once and I wondered if he’d gone to hide her for safety. I hated it. I hated it so much
“Is that everything?” Karl asked me as I flipped through the bags
I nodded in response and he beckoned to Kent who immediately started the car.
Karl opened the door to the backseat, helping me in. I watched Darren scamper back inside from the rearview mirror as we drove away.
I’m sure you have so many questions,” I broke the silence that was filling the car.
“Your personal life is not my business, as neither is mine.”
I hugged my arms around me, shivering from the wetness of my clothes sticking to me.
“Kent, turn the heat up, he said, taking off his suit and putting it around me while I shivered.
“Thank you so much for helping me out,” I turned to look at him but his eyes were fixed on the road and in a nonchalant voice, he responded
“You need to look presentable at the family event.
Oh So that was why he was being so caring? Of course that made sense. He didn’t want me battered before the main event.
I didn’t know why the weight of his words stung my chest but I pressed my lips into a tight line, hoping to ignore it.
Soon enough we started to drive past the familiar houses I knew, the structures we approached were in neighbourhoods I never thought I’d walk into my life.
The trans
mansions secuted unapproachable and I knew these belonged to people in a different tax bracket
The reality was starting to dawn on me that I might be walking into something much bigger than I thought.
I stiffened in my seat and it wasn’t until I heard his deep voice fill my head, that I flinched out of my thoughts.
“We’re here,” he said.
I looked up to see what here neant. Tell me why I saw the biggest, giant mansion standing in front of me. Not only were there three guarded gates

leading to the main entrance, there were multiple teams of securities lining the street around the house, if it could even be called that.
The security men bowed their heads as we drove into the building and after what felt like hours, we reached the parking space.
It was lined with fifteen other vehicles, including motorcycles. I didn’t understand who would need so many.
Karl helped me out of the car, while I tried to hide how much I didn’t belong here.
There was
was a fountain made from his statue in the middle of the land, neat grass and flowers lined the path to the main entrance.
Multiple helps were waiting to receive us at the entrance of the white museum like building.
There was a set of staff to take off his shoes when we walked in, another getting rid of his ties and jewelries while I trailed behind him like a lost
puppy.
The floors were black marble tiles and golden chandeliers shone bright lights at us. Giant paintings covered the walls and there were a million stairs leading to everywhere.
This is where you’ll be staying for the year you’ll be with me” he said when we stopped in front of a giant door, he pointed in the opposite direction, “my room’s this one, so if you need anything”
I couldn’t speak, I couldn’t find my words so I nodded instead, he unlocked the door revealing a massive room with one side of the wall being a
Hoor to ceiling window with a view of the botanical garden. A king sized bed sat in the center with a walk in closet occupying the other side of the wall.
“It’s undecorated so you can make your choice,” he pocketed his hands behind me while I took it all in
This room that was three times the size of my house was undecorated to him?
“I don’t know what to say Mr Lever, I just-”
at to say
His eyes flickered to the wall clock, “get some rest, he cut me off, “tomorrow will be packed with activities,” he said.
I nodded and turned around on my heels when he suddenly caught my wrists, securing them both in one hand.
gasped in shock, eyes going wide as he pinned me to the nearest wall, hands above
my head.
“That’s it?” He raised a brow at me.
“What do you m–mean?” 1.stammered from the shock of it all
“You’re just going to go to bed?” He stopped his eyes on my lips, I’m not sure that’s what married couples do at night.”
