I crossed my arms, leaning against my car as I waited. The seconds dragged on, every passing moment stoking the fire inside me. He thought he could ignore me? Brush me off like I didn’t matter?
Finally, the door opened, and Nathan stepped out, his movements slow and deliberate as he approached me. Even now, he radiated that calm, infuriating charm that had pulled me in from the start.
“Why are you screaming like a dog in the middle of the night?” he asked, his tone laced with mockery as he stopped a few feet away.
I straightened, refusing to be intimidated. “Why do you think I’m here? We need to talk.”
His brow arched, his hands sliding into his pockets. “About what, Adelaide? You couldn’t have waited until morning?”
“No,” I snapped, stepping closer. “Because you keep avoiding me. What’s going on, Nathan? You act like I’m the one working for you when this was supposed to be a partnership.”
Nathan sighed, his gaze shifting away for a moment before landing back on me.
“Let’s talk inside,” he said, gesturing toward the house. “We don’t need the neighbors hearing this.”
Nathan opened the door and stepped aside, his expression sharp but controlled. “You shouldn’t come barging into my home like this,” he stated, his tone clipped.
I brushed past him, ignoring his scolding. “I can because I’m your woman,” I declared, turning to face him as I crossed my arms. My voice carried the weight of my frustration, and I refused to back down. “Before you put a ring on Raina’s finger, you’re putting one on mine. She can have the fake one.”
Nathan rolled his eyes and shut the door, leaning against it for a moment. “Adelaide, that’s the dumbest thing I’ve heard today. Do you think Raina wouldn’t notice a fake ring? She’s not as clueless as you like to think.”
I glared at him, my temper flaring. “And you’re acting like I don’t matter anymore. What’s going on, Nathan? You’re pushing me to the side, making me feel like I’m just another piece in your game.”
He exhaled, his shoulders relaxing slightly as he crossed the room to face me. His voice softened, but his eyes were calculating. “Why are you acting like this? You know how important this plan is. We’re so close.”
“So close?” I shot back, my voice rising. “It doesn’t feel like we’re in this together anymore. You’re always running off, spending time with her. It’s like you don’t want me.”
Nathan stepped closer, his hands finding my shoulders. His grip was firm but not harsh. “Adelaide,” he murmured, his tone laced with forced patience. We’re partners in this. You know that. But this isn’t the time for jealousy.”
“Jealousy?” I scoffed, shaking my head. “You’ve been absent, Nathan. And I’m not blind–I see how you look at her.”
His jaw clenched, but he didn’t pull away. Instead, he leaned in and pressed his lips to mine, silencing my protests. For a moment, I let myself melt into the kiss, craving the connection I felt was slipping away. But even as his lips moved against mine, I knew this wasn’t enough to fix things.
When he pulled back, he sighed. “I’ve been distracted,” he admitted, his voice tinged with frustration. “Raina and her ex are getting on my nerves. They’re making everything more complicated than it needs to be.”
I searched his face, trying to gauge his sincerity. “What’s the next step, then?” I demanded, my tone firm.
Nathan ran a hand through his hair, his calm mask slipping for just a moment. “We wait for the old man to die,” he said flatly. “Once he’s gone, I’ll make my move.”
His words sent a chill down my spine, but I didn’t show it. Instead, I nodded, feigning agreement. My thoughts, however, raced. When the old man dies, I thought to myself, Raina would follow soon after. Only, hers would take more time. The poison was doing its job, slowly but surely.
