Chapter 181
DOMINIC
I felt like absolute shit. Faith was right. Hell, everyone was right. What the fuck was I thinking, bringing Eliza into my home? Our home. I should’ve Taken her somewhere else–dragged her to some apartment far away, anything to keep Faith from having to deal with her presence. Instead, I’d invited chaos into the one place Faith should’ve felt safe.
I ran a hand through my hair, yanking at the strands as if the pain would somehow help me think straight. When had become such a moron? My actions were normally well thought out and calculated. But not this time. This time, I’d let emotion and stupidity steer the ship.
I glanced over at Faith lying so still in the hospital bed. Her face was pale, her breathing steady but shallow. The doctor had said she’d passed out from stress. Stress that I had caused. She didn’t deserve this–any of it. And Eliza? I didn’t care that she bed. Hell, I knew she was faking it, putting on her little theatrics. But Faith? She was really hurt, and I didn’t know how to fix it.
The door creaked open and Alex stepped through it. His face was grim as his eyes ralued over me to Faith and back again. “This has gone way too far, he said, his voice low and firm. “You need to put a stop to this insanity, Daminie. Now.”
“I know,” I muttered, hardly able to look him in the eye. Even to my cars, my voice lacked conviction. “I screwed up. It was stupid to let Eliza stay.”
“Stupid doesn’t even begin to cover it,” retorted Alex, folding his arms across his chest. “What the hall were you thinking? And don’t give me that you weren’t. That’s not like you.”
and keep Eliza close enough to control her. I was
I let out a heavy sigh and fell back in my chair. “I thought I could handle it,” I said. “Keep Faith safe and keep i Wrong”
“Yeah, no kidding” The bitter amor in Alex’s voice softened his words, but they were still like a hammer. “So what now? What’s the plan?”
“For once in my life, I don’t know,” I said, the admission casting bitter on my tongue.
We just sat there silently for a second before the door swung open. A nurse stopped in, and her face gave away nothing. “Your wife is asking f for you,” she said
Alex’s eyebrow was arched in surprise, and I scowled. “What are you telling about? My wife is right here.” I nodded toward Faith, who hadn’t moved our of the bed
The nurse, hesitated then explained “The woman in the other room.”
The knot in my stomach twisted tighter. Of course. Eliza Istood, taking Alex’s hand to get him to follow me “Let’s get this over with.”
The moment I stepped into Eliza’s room, the theatrics began. She was sitting on the edge of the bed, looking quite comfortable, like she owned the place. But the moment the door creaked open, her face crumpled, and tears spilled down her cheeks with starting speed.
*Dominic!” she walled, clutching her stomach like she was in pain. “Thank God you’re here. She killed our baby! Our baby!
1 froze mid–step, shocked at the ludicrousness of her accusation. My gaze flew to Alex, leaning against the doorframe, his arms crossed. He met my incredulous look and mouthed, Don’t even ask
“Our baby,” Eliza went on melodramatically, her voice rising “She pushed me, Dominic! Out of jealousy! She killed your heir. What kind of a monster
does that?”
“Eliza,” I said, my voice flat, “how did she kill a baby that didn’t exist?“!
Her crocodile tears dried up in a trice as her sobs wore replaced by a furious glare. “How dare you?” she spat, her tone changed in a blink. “You’re taking
“I’m taking the side of reality,” I snapped. “You wore never pregnant. This whole charade? It’s done
Eliza’s lip curled to a sneer. “You’ll pay for this,” she spat, her voice low and venomous. “I’ll make her pay. I’ll make you both pay.”
Just as I was about to react, a burst of yelling erupted down the hall, followed by a crash. My chest tightened as panic took hold. I didn’t need to think twice–1 bolood from the room with Alex hot on my beds.
The scene outside Faith’s room was a nightmare. Two officers were cutting her hands behind her back, their faces expressionless as if this were just another routine arrest.
“What the hell is going on here?!” I roared, my voice echoing through the hall. “What are you doing? That’s my wide!”
Do of them stepped forward, his voice clipped as he introduced himself, “Detective Carter. We received a call that your wile assaulted your pregnant. girlfriend. The alleged assault was said to have caused her to lose the pregnancy.“I blinlood in sheer incredulity at his words. “She isn’t my girlfriend!” I bellowed. “And she wasn’t pregnant! This is a lie of the worst kind in hell!”
