nessa was driving like a maniac. Her hands were clamped so tightly on the wheel that her knuckles were white. She took a sharp turn, and the tires uealed in protest. My heart thudded against my ribs as I grabbed onto the seat, bracing myself.
What the hell are you doing?” I snapped at her. “You said we were going to the Sullivans!”
e didn’t answer right away, her gaze fixed on the road, the city lights blurring past us.

nessa snorted. “Yeah? Then why did you look like you were about to bolt when I grabbed you? Why were those men at the airport watching you like a mn hawk?”

The more we drew closer to the Graham mansion, the more my stomach twinged with unease.
Then I saw them.
Police cars. Flashing lights. A few officers standing outside the estate, murmuring amongst each other.
Panic stirred in my gut.
No.
My brain froze in terror. The first thought that came to mind. Did someone die?
Vanessa slammed on the brakes to slow down as she drove by, squinting through her window at the scene. “Is this why you were in a hurry?” she asked
- me.
I shook my head, attempting to dislodge the block that had formed in my throat. “I don’t know,” I hardly whispered.
My eyes searched for Alex. He was to the side with one of the officers, frozen still but for the clenched jaw. Dominic was a few feet away, speaking to another officer but looked devastated.
Something was wrong.
I had time to process that before Alex’s head whipped to mine.
For a couple of seconds, he simply stared.
Shock was on his face first. Then anger.
Just like that I knew–he didn’t wasn’t happy to see me.
