They had covered every detail. Without enough time, I had no way to defend myself.
“You’re not suited for the company. You should stay home and do housework instead.
“Being a full–time housewife suits you better.”
Lucas casually dropped this line and worked with all the shareholders to force me to give up all my shares.
He wasn’t good at lying.
I could see his eyes clearly avoiding mine.
It was obvious he knew this was all fake.
He chose to believe it just to satisfy his ridiculous need for control. He wanted to take everything from me, make me his possession, turn me into a caged bird that couldn’t fly!
The moment I signed, maybe it was relief–or maybe I was just drained from all the years of research.
Everything went black, and I collapsed heavily to the floor.
The last thing I saw was Lucas’s increasingly panicked expression as he rushed toward me.
“Emma, Emma!”
How ridiculous. For ten years, I buried myself in the lab, desperately

researching patents for Lucas’s half–dead company.

We used to love each other so much. Whenever I fell asleep from exhaustion in the lab, I’d always wake up to find Lucas sitting beside me, caring for me.
When I passed out from overwork, I’d wake up to see him holding freshly made soup, watching over me with concern.

When I opened my eyes again, I saw the stark white hospital walls. I’d experienced this feeling countless times over the past ten years.
“Don’t worry, sir and ma’am. Everything that belonged to Emma will be Sophie’s from now on. I’ll be responsible for Sophie.”
As soon as I woke up, I heard Lucas making his solemn promise outside the hospital room.
It was exactly the same promise he’d once made to me.
I closed my eyes and held back my tears, but my heart was bleeding.
After Sophie’s parents left, I heard Sophie’s voice.
“Lucas, what Emma did this time was really too much, but we can’t call the police. She’s sacrificed too much for the company and for you.
“How about we just lock her up for a while to let her cool down? No matter what, we can’t send her to prison.”
Lucas agreed.
While pretending to be unconscious, I was thrown into the company’s basement.

Lucas took all my electronic devices and left me wearing only a thin nightgown in the pitch–black basement.

All I could hear were the sounds of dripping water and the dull hum of electronic equipment.
Despair and pain filled my mind.
After just two days, I was physically and mentally drained, and my thoughts started to blur.
Then Lucas pushed open the door like a victor, looking down at me from above.
My eyes were unfocused, and I couldn’t even concentrate. The bright light hitting my eyes almost made me pass out again.
“Acting pitiful won’t work.”
Lucas just sneered and coldly dropped those four words.
“You’ll still attend company meetings as usual, but Sophie will have decision–making power.”
Maybe because I’d been at the company for so long, plus my status as his legal wife, Lucas couldn’t just let Sophie completely replace me, so he chose this underhanded approach.
I laughed coldly and used all my strength to stay rational.
“No problem.”
Lucas seemed like he wanted to ask something else, but he didn’t say it. He stiffly left me with one more line.
“Looks like Sophie was right. Letting you cool down by yourself really made you more obedient.”

After he tossed me my phone, I opened the secure app that Nina Stevens had exclusively designed for me and saw the messages she’d sent.
“Everything’s ready. I’ve also settled your brother. When do we leave?
“Emma, are you okay? Remember to reply when you see this.
“I can’t find you. Where have you been, Emma?”
I put away my phone, took a deep breath, and quickly typed on the screen.
“Lucas is taking Sophie to Malibu tomorrow. That’s our best shot.”
