Chapter 4
In the end, I could not even remember how many times they slapped
- me.
Veronica strutted over smugly. She ran her sharp nails over my swollen cheek.
“You really don’t know your place. Even if I’m married, it won’t matter because I’m the only one in his heart.
“If it weren’t for your filthy smell, you’d never have even seen him in this life. Try dreaming again and you won’t even know how you’ll die.”
My vision was still fuzzy from the pain, but somehow the corner of my mouth lifted in a tiny smile.
She did not have to threaten me as I had already picked my own way to “die.” Soon, I would be gone for good.
That night, I lay in bed trying to recover, but Ruben would not leave me alone. He forced my clothes off.
I really did not want him to touch me one last time, and I was about to push him away when someone knocked on the door. “Mr. Errard, Ms. Veronica Raimond has a high fever and the doctor says it’s acute sepsis. She needs a blood transfusion right now. The only match is Ms. Elise…
“If she doesn’t get blood tonight, she might not make it!”
Ruben froze, then got off me in a hurry. However, when he saw all the bruises and scars on me, he hesitated.

I had just had a miscarriage and been beaten half to death, so taking blood now could…
At the same time, he could not watch Veronica suffer either.
So he called the best blood specialist in Los Angeles and told them to draw 1,000 milliliters of blood from me as “gently” as possible.
My whole body felt ice–cold as I leaned against him, shaking. My skin was paper–white and I blacked out halfway through the blood draw.
His hands shook a little. His eyes were hard to read as he said, “I’ll let you off tonight. But don’t think that just because Veronica used your blood, you’re owed anything.”
I nodded weakly, whispering, “Got it.”
I rubbed my freezing hands together and forced myself out of bed. When he left, I slowly packed up my things for tomorrow.
“Ruben, there is no future for us,” I said inwardly.
At three in the morning, someone broke the lock on my attic door. Bastien Malet, a top hacker, slipped inside holding a small nano spray
can.
“Close your eyes and hold on for three seconds.”
A sharp burning feeling spread across my face. I bit down on the cloth ball I stuffed in my mouth to stop myself from screaming.
Three seconds later, I looked in the mirror and a whole new face stared back at me, pale and unrecognizable.
“It’ll last 48 hours. Let’s go.”

The next moment, we snuck down from the attic and ran to the waiting
car.
About 500 meters away, there was a huge explosion behind us. The attic was gone, blown to rubble.
I listened to the blast echoing in my chest and whispered in my mind.
“Ruben, goodbye.”
