He grabbed my pant leg, choking back tears as he said, “Leila, I know it was all my fault before. I know that maybe because of this cat, I neglected you.”
His voice trembled: “I’m begging you, please let it go.”

Before he could finish speaking, another agonized scream came from the cat.
Combined with Ruth’s crying, the entire house descended into complete chaos.
Jenny also dropped to her knees, and the two of them each grabbed one of my legs, desperately pleading with me to spare the cat.
