Chapter 5
“Mein Herz schlägt nur für dich.”
“My heart beats only for you.”
Leroy confessed to me in French, holding up the book that symbolized our bond.
Those words were once written by me, during the days when my heart first fluttered for him.
I blushed instantly.
I had always thought he didn’t understand French.
Turns out, my little secret had been discovered long ago.

And finally, I understood–the man who made my heart race wasn’t Jeremy; it was Leroy.
It wasn’t that he had changed his heart–it was that I had mistaken the person all along!
Leroy, noticing my flushed face, smiled softly.
“I never knew my little girl’s judgment would be so poor, mistaking that fool Jeremy for me!”
I couldn’t help but retort.
“It wasn’t that! After I returned to the country, I couldn’t contact you anymore. I almost thought… you didn’t want me anymore.”
As I spoke, my eyes welled up with tears.
Leroy’s heart ached.

He lowered his head, apologizing.
“I’m sorry, Robbie. I was in an accident and had to recover for a long time… so…”
Hearing his words, I couldn’t help but glance at his legs.
So, he hadn’t been able to come find me after all.
I shook my head, heart aching for him.

“It’s okay. At least we’ve met again.”
Tears shimmered in my eyes.
Leroy tenderly brushed my hair, his hand gentle.
Just then, my phone rang–it was my father

calling.
“Get back right now!”
His tone left no room for argument.
Leroy frowned in displeasure.
“Robbie, if this is about your family, I can…”
I shook my head.
“No need, Roy. I can already guess it’s Georgia running off to complain, trying to force me to go back and divorce Jeremy, so she can have him all to herself. Just what I needed… I couldn’t have asked for more.”
“But I won’t let this slide! You know, the Stellar Group was my mother’s life’s work. Why should they profit while I lose everything?”

A flash of hatred gleamed in my eyes.
Leroy respected my determination.
“Okay, I trust you, Robbie. You’ll handle it.”
I smiled, kneeling down and taking his hand.

“Leroy, take care of yourself. When I come back, I’ll marry you.”
Leroy played along with my request.
“Alright, I’ll wait for my Robbie to marry me.”
When I got home, Georgia, my dad, and her mother, Zelene, were all sitting in the living room, scrutinizing me.
“Bang!”

As soon as my dad saw me, he got angry and threw an ashtray at me.
I dodged it skillfully.
He grew more enraged, shaking with fury as The pointed his cane at me, scolding me:
“You ungrateful, how many times have I told you not to cause trouble, not to embarrass me? Why can’t you ever remember that?!”
Georgia and Zelene wiped their tears, feigning compassion and trying to calm him down.
“Forget it, honey, Robbie’s had it hard–losing her mother so early. We can overlook it, no big deal.”
Watching this drama unfold, I casually pulled up a chair, crossed my legs, and sneered

sarcastically.
“Embarrassing? Dad, to be honest, I don’t quite get it anymore. Whose name is actually on the marriage certificate between me and Jeremy? The world’s changed so much, hasn’t it? Since when did it become some kind of legendary tale for a sister and her brother–in–law to be caught in bed together, while the one whose family got stolen away is painted as the villain–the one everyone mocks and shames?”
Hearing my words, Georgia and Zelene’s faces changed dramatically, and my
dad looked as though he had swallowed something vile.
“You… you… you!!!”
He pointed at me, sputtering, unable to find a single fault in what I’d said.
