Chapter 6

Several weeks had passed, and Harper had already completed half of her plan to “date 100 boyfriends.” She hung a canvas in the dorm with numbers 1 to 100 written on it, crossing off a number each time she got a new boyfriend.
Not only did Harper continue switching boyfriends frequently, but she also kept refusing to use protection. Whenever someone reminded her about it, she would mock and ridicule them.
With such a high turnover rate of boyfriends, it was only a matter of time before she got pregnant.
But I remembered the doctor specifically warning that Grace’s body could no longer handle another pregnancy, or she might face life–threatening complications.
At noon, Harper video–called Grace from the dorm. I could hear Grace’s voice getting weaker and weaker, even gasping for breath while speaking.
I suddenly felt a pang of sympathy, Harper was despicable, but
Grace was innocent.
However, I really didn’t know how to warn Grace. If things got exposed, Harper would target me again and push me to the breaking point.
While I was still hesitating, Harper got another new boyfriend.

He was a foreigner, also an exchange student at our school.

Before going out on their date, Harper kept bragging to us: “My luck has turned around! I actually got to be with a foreigner. You guys must be so jealous, right? He’s tall, handsome, and incredibly masculine. Forget just being with him—I’d even be willing to have his baby!”
Everyone was already used to Harper’s behavior, so they just gave her a few casual responses and then urged her to leave.
Only I found it amusing in my heart. I hoped Harper meant what she said that she really would be willing to have this man’s baby.
I had a feeling bigger trouble was coming, so I simply submitted an off–campus housing application to the school and rented a small place outside.
To avoid arousing Harper’s suspicion, I put away all my tight crop tops and switched to loose, baggy t–shirts.
After classes, I would immediately return to my rental place and avoid too much contact with others.
Whenever classmates invited me to group dinners or club activities, I declined using “not feeling well” as an excuse.
Gradually, rumors started spreading around school. Some said I had been influenced by Harper and was secretly dating

boyfriends too, even that I was pregnant.
The more abnormal my behavior became, the more pleased Harper seemed.

My disguise was working. Harper indeed hadn’t come to bother me at all.
Every day after classes, I would lie in my rental place eating snacks and watching TV shows–life was quite comfortable.
I received Harper’s call again because Grace had miscarried.
Harper said through tears: “Charlotte, my mom suddenly had a miscarriage. She’s in the ICU at the hospital now. Can you come over? I need your help.”
From her tone, she sounded really panicked.
I leaned back on the sofa and said: “What? But my body isn’t really convenient for moving around right now. I probably can’t make it over there.”
