I watched him Eric leave, a smirk playing on my lips as I leaned back in my chair, already knowing how this was going to end.
I took my time, instructing my secretary and Wendy, the nosiest woman in the office, to start clearing out Eric’s belongings. Wendy, who had a talent for poking her head into everything, was all too eager to get involved.
The two worked silently, putting Eric’s things into boxes while moving my belongings into the corner office that had once been his. I sat in his chair, turning it around, letting my eyes watch over the view and admiring the space. As much as I knew this position came partly due to my relationship with Emerson, I also knew I had worked damn hard for it. I deserved this and I didn’t care how I got it.
I would have done the morally right thing by waiting for Eric to clear out his own office, but considering how he had treated me this morning, he didn’t deserve it. Plus I knew he was going to make a fuss. As they continued setting up, I couldn’t help but imagine Eric’s face as he stormed upstairs to confront his father.
Emerson was not a man who went back on his word. If he had made this decision, it was final. Sure, I may have had some influence, but I hadn’t told Emerson to give me the position, Eric’s position. He did that on his own, and he hadn’t even informed me about it before I got the letter. This was as much a surprise to me as it was to Eric, the only difference was, I was now on top, and he answered to me.
Minutes passed, and through the glass walls of the office, I saw people moving around, their pace quicker than usual. I called out to Wendy, who was nearby, clearly gossiping with whoever would listen.
“What’s going on outside there, Wendy?”
She hesitated, her eyes flicking toward the upper floors.
“It’s the Blackwinds,” she finally whispered. “They’re having a huge argument upstairs. The whole office is practically shutting down to watch. Some people have already gone to listen in.”
I shook my head, frustrated at the nerves of these people.
“That’s where everyone is going?” I asked, noticing the thinning crowd on our floor.
Wendy nodded sheepishly as if she wasn’t one of the ones eager to witness the drama. I stood up, fully prepared to go upstairs myself, but then stopped. I told myself I shouldn’t get involved. After all, this was between Eric and Emerson.

I called Emerson’s phone, but he didn’t pick up.
“This is getting out of hand,‘ I thought. I needed to do something before the situation got worse.
Against my better judgment, I stood up and began following the flow of people toward the stairs. As I approached, the sounds of raised voices became unmistakable, Eric’s shouts echoed all the way down the stairwell.
People, noticing my arrival, averted their eyes and began descending, pretending they hadn’t been eavesdropping. I continued on, ignoring them.
When I reached the top floor, I could already hear the argument in full swing. Eric’s voice sounded loud and furious, while his father’s responses were calm and murmured.
I stepped into the large lobby, and there they were. Eric, his appearance dishevelled, screaming at the top of his lungs, while Emerson stood tall and calm, his arms crossed, letting his son unleash his fury.
Eric was a mess, his face red with frustration.
“You can’t do this to me!” he yelled. “This company is mine! You can’t just hand it over to her!”
Emerson’s calm voice cut through.
“I’m not handing anything over, Eric. I didn’t give the company, But I gave her your position. A position You’ve failed to perform, and I’ve made the decision that’s best for the company.”
“You mean best for her!” Eric spat, his finger jabbing toward the door.
I walked in and made my presence known. Eric turned to look at me, his anger visibly rising by degrees.
The hatred in his eyes was crystal clear, and I had never seen someone glare at me. with such venom.
“And here comes the woman of the hour,” he sneered. “Get your ring ready.”
I decided to ignore his jab, focusing instead on Emerson.
“What’s going on?” I asked as I started walking toward him.
But Eric was quicker. He stepped between us, forcing me to take two steps back. He

stood there, staring at both of us like we were about to enter a wrestling match, his fury filling the space.
“You want to know what’s going on, Mina? You really want to know?” His voice was sharp, cutting through the room. “What’s going on is that you’re using my father against me! You and I were married. We got divorced. That should have been the end of it. But no…. you couldn’t handle rejection. You came onto my father and decided to use him against me. Now you’re going to take my job, my company, and what’s next? My birthright? My name?”
“Eric….,” I started to say, but Emerson intervened,
“Erik, that’s enough! This has nothing to do with her. I made the decision. If you have a problem with it, take it up with me.”
But Eric wasn’t having it. “She’s the reason for everything! She has no right to take my position! And how could she? I own shares in this company. I care about this company! She’s nothing here…. how could she have more say than I do? I….”
“Well, actually, Mina owns shares in the company,” Emerson said.
Erik’s eyes bulged in shock, and he started gulping for air. It was like the wind had been knocked out of him. He began to untie his tie, his movements uncoordinated.
“What? What did you say?” he asked, his voice hoarse. “What are you saying? What do you mean?”
I stood frozen, my eyes widening in disbelief. Shares? What shares?
“She owns 5% of the company,” Emerson said calmly.
“Five per cent?” Erik sputtered, his face growing red with rage. “And where the hell did she get that? Where did she get the money to buy shares in my company? And who the hell did she buy them from?”
“I gave them to her,” Emerson said, his tone still calm.
“You did what?” Eric exploded, his voice booming through the room.
It was as if the news had hit him like a freight train, shaking him to his core. “You gave her the shares that were supposed to be mine? You gave her shares that were going to be my inheritance?”
“Eric,” Emerson said, his voice steady, “I’m not dead yet. I’m alive and I can do with my shares as I see fit.”
“I know that,” Erik shot back, his voice trembling with anger.

“But if you’re going to keep giving her things that I’m supposed to inherit later, like all your shares, all your assets, all your properties, what the hell will I be left with when you’re gone? She will have.” Eric’s voice trembled with fury as he stared at his father, his face marked in disbelief and anger.
“Maybe you should stop thinking about inheriting things from me and start thinking about making things of your own,” his father replied.”
