Chapter 38
As soon as Virgil’s car entered the Morton family, the servant immediately went inside to notify them..
When Maynard Morton, Virgil’s grandpa, heard that Virgil had returned, he immediately ordered the kitchen to prepare dinner and called everyone downstairs,
Lyslia was the last to take her seat. Maynard, glaring at her with a puffed–out chest, snapped, “What took you so long? The food’s cold!”
“It’s already past dinnertime” Lydia retorted, her voice icy as she turned to Virgil. “If you didn’t want to come back, you should’ve said so earlier.
“Making the elders wail–don’t you have any manners? I don’t know what kind of upbringing that woman gave you”
Maynard immediately barked. “Enough! If you don’t want to eat, go upstairs!”
Walion Morton, Lydia’s husband, gently tugged on Lydia’s arm, signaling her to quiet down, but her gaze remained cold as she stared at Virgil.
“Conrad you haven’t been home for dinner in a while. I heard you’ve been really busy with work lately. You look thinner; eat more!” Maynard said, his face full ofation as he piled food onto Virgil’s plate.
Virgil remained silent, eating quietly.
Walton tried to start a conversation. “How’s everything at the company? Anything you’re struggling with?”
“No Virgil answered curtly.
Walton had hoped to ease the tension by talking about work, but with Virgil’s brief response, he didn’t know how to keep the conversation going, He opened his mouth but said nothing.
Maynard, proud as ever, chimed in, “Conrad is capable, nothing can stop him!” He added more meat to Virgil’s plate.
“But,” Maynard suddenly grew serious, “you’re 28 now You’re not getting any younger. It’s time to sort out your personal life. After all, you’re the only son your father has. One day, everything in Morton Group will be yours. You can’t leave no heir behind.”
He then turned to scold Lydia. “As Conrad’s mother, you should be taking more interest in his marriage. Find him a few good girls to meet. He’s 28 and doesn’t even have a girlfriend. Aren’t you worried?”
“Mr. Morton” A voice called from the door. Everyone looked up to see Lucas standing there
“Lucas” Lydia immediately stood up and went to greet Lucas.
Lucas smiled gently, his expression sweet and obedient. “I heard you’ve been having trouble sleeping, Mom, so I asked a friend overseas to get some medicine for you. They’re really good for insomnia and have no side effects. Try them.”
Lydia took the medicine from him passing them to the servant. She smiled commentedly. “You’re always so thoughtful”
“And these are for Grandpa and Dad Lucas added, taking two gift bags from his assistant and handing them to the servant
Maynard, touched by Lucas’s filial gesture, didn’t stay upset. He didn’t say anything but gave him an approving nod, Walion, seeing Lucas, had a conflicted look on his face. Despite his concerns for Conrad, he still nodded and said, “You’re thoughtful.”
“Lucas, have you eaten yet? If not, sit down and eat with Mom,” Lydia immediately suggested, motioning for the servant to set an extra fork.
Just then, Virgil suddenly stood up, the screech of his chair against the floor drawing everyone’s attention.
Maynard’s face darkened when he heard the sound. “Conrad
Tve got work to do. I’m leaving now” Without waiting for a reply, Virgil turned and walked out, disappearing from everyone’s sight.
Maynard shot a sharp look at 1 ydu.
Lydu, holding Lucas’s hand, didn’t feel shard done anything wrong. After all, Lucas was her son ino. She thought, Since Lucas can accept Conrad, why can’t Conrad accept Lucas My son should never be so harrow–minded”
