Chapter 26 Assassination Attempt

Jasper’s gaze dulled as he spoke, and Liam, sensing the shift in mood, stopped talking, his desire. for conversation fading.
Summer noticed the change and tugged at his sleeve. “What happened?”
Jasper gently patted her head. “A few years ago, Mr. Walker, one of our country’s officials, was flying abroad for a business trip. Some bad people, not wanting us to strengthen ties with other nations, planted explosives on the plane he was traveling on. But Mr. Walker had a last–minute change of plans and flew on a different plane. The assassination attempt failed. Unfortunately, the 16 people on that plane–every single one of them–lost their lives.”
It was the kind of thing a child didn’t need to hear.
But Summer had grown up around spies and was remarkably perceptive for her age. Jasper didn’t know what had compelled him, but in a quiet voice, he’s telling her about the incident that had happened when Drakoria was first established.
Liam, who had been listening, frowned. He didn’t think this was something that shouldn’t be spoken about–it had been in the news after all. But could Summer really understand? She was so
young.
Summer frowned, clearly confused. “Didn’t they investigate?”
Investigate what? The plane?” Jasper scoffed,
Summer nodded.
Jasper sneered bitterly. “We could’ve investigated it here, but how would we have done that. abroad? Those people are easily bought off.”
He paused, his voice growing quieter, almost a murmur. “The plane was Tripor’s–ours wasn’t available. If only we’d had our own, or if we could’ve caught those people beforehand-”
But no number of “if onlys‘ could have saved those who had perished.
Summer noticed the fleeting emotion in Jasper’s eyes, something like a glimmer of sorrow. She reached into her pocket absentmindedly.
Planes, huh?
She felt like she might have something related to that in her system. But right now, it seemed out of reach.
Still, if she could save Jasper a few more times, could it be like when Grandpa secretly played those little games behind Grandma’s back? Maybe, just maybe, she could level up, and better equipment would drop.
The thought brought some clarity to her foggy mind. Straightening up in her seat, Summer

Jasper was about to laugh at her antics but kept a serious face. “No talk! You’ve kept me awake for days with all your energy! I’m sick, you know! I need rest!”
Summer opened her mouth to argue, but before she could, someone snatched her arm and moved her off Jasper’s lap.
“Come on, let’s talk!” Liam said, a grin on his face. “T’d be happy to chat with you!”
Liam hadn’t forgotten Colin’s assignment–to interact with Summer more and see if he could learn anything useful.
She was young, so there were things she might not fully grasp. Perhaps, through casual conversation, she might unknowingly reveal something.
Summer pursed her lips and gave Liam a dismissive once–over before quickly looking away. He was the kind of creature that didn’t drop good loot, and she wasn’t about to waste her time talking to him.
“Grandma, tired! Sleep!” she declared, turning her body toward Helena and stretching her hand
out
Liam, clearly offended but not upset, poked her gently on the back of her head. “So you’re just going to reject me like that? But I even brought you a gift!”
A gift?
Summer’s hand froze midair, and she glanced at Liam, arching an eyebrow. After a moment, she shook her head in refusal. “Poor, you’re family!”
Gifts needed money, and money wasn’t easy to come by these days.
Since Liam was “family“, and clearly not wealthy, she couldn’t let him waste his money on her. If she ever needed something, she’d go after the human traffickers or spies. Catch them, trade them. for money, and then buy whatever she needed.
Money was abundant that way–and much more convenient.
She was quite the savvy little Summer.
Liam understood and chuckled. “It’s a small gift. Really, not much at all!”
Once Summer was settled in Helena’s arms, Liam pulled out a small green bag and produced a book.
This is a Comprehensive Dictionary! Liam said, handing the dictionary to Summer. “Jasper and I were talking, and he mentioned that you can already read. But it seems your speaking skills are still a bit rough.”
His voice was low, and the rumbling noise of the train nearly drowned it out. Only the people sitting near them could hear.

speech was nothing new, so they didn’t look down on her for it.

Liam had considered this before deciding to give it to her now. You can’t find many words in a newspaper. But with a dictionary, you’ll have so many more options. Just point at the words want to say, and we’ll understand!”
