regretted it
My fiancé, Jason, humiliated me at our
college reunion. All because I accidentally
spilled red wine on his “ex–girlfriend’s,”
Tiffany’s, heels.
He forced me to lick them clean, right there
in front of everyone.
I refused.
He had me stripped down to my underwear
and thrown out of the hotel.
A classmate looked back at me, worried.
“She’s your fiancée, Jason. Isn’t this a bit
much?”
He shrugged it off.
“Relax. She’s crazy about me. You couldn’t
get rid of her with a cattle prod.”
That’s when I knew it was over.
I called off the wedding right then and there

And signed up to be a combat medic.

When I told the hospital director I’d accept
the combat medic position, he was thrilled
but also confused.
“That’s fantastic you’re going! But… aren’t
you getting married soon?”
I tightened my lips. “The wedding’s off. I’m
focusing on my career. Saving lives.”
He paused, then said nothing more.
After signing the paperwork, I ran into Tiffany
and Jason in the hallway.
Jason went into the lab with some test results
and didn’t see me.
I tried to ignore them, but Tiffany blocked my
way.
A smug grin spread across her face.
“So, how was being publicly humiliated last
night?”
“So what if you and Jason are getting
married? He still protects me.”
I didn’t bother arguing. “Fine, I’ll let him go.”
“Let him go? You’re just admitting you’re not
good enough for him. I won, obviously!”
Tiffany’s true colors shone through, her face.
twisting with spite. Then, something seemed
to change. She lowered her head, her voice
cracking.
“I’m sorry, sis. Please don’t be mad at Jason.”
Then Jason appeared, “Lindsay! What are you
doing?”
“Don’t be mad, honey. After what happened
last night, it’s only fair sis hits me.”
She looked at Jason, all teary–eyed and
vulnerable, and he pulled her into a hug,
glaring at me.
“Lindsay! If you hadn’t been so malicious,
knowing those shoes couldn’t get wet, and
deliberately spilled wine on them, I wouldn’t
have punished you!”
<
“You won’t apologize to Tiffany, and now
you’re hitting her? How heartless can you
be!”
“I order you to apologize to Tiffany right now,
or the wedding’s off again!”
My heart shattered into a million pieces.
Jason had postponed the wedding several
times because of Tiffany.
I’d always given in because I loved him. But
now, she was his bargaining chip.
Before Tiffany, he’d always put me first. But
six months after she showed up, everything
changed. He’d even humiliated me like that,
all for her.
A wave of sadness washed over me.
“Honey, don’t blame her. Tiffany upset her…”
Tiffany mumbled an apology, her eyes devoid
of remorse; her lips curled into a triumphant
smirk.
I had a fever from catching a cold. I didn’t
く
want to deal with them anymore, so I turned
to leave.
I realized how weak I was–I could barely
stand.
Jason noticed, reaching out. “Lindsay, are
you…
Before he could finish, Tiffany clutched her
chest and started coughing violently.
“Honey… it hurts.”
In an instant, his hand, meant to help me,
shot towards Tiffany.
My vision blurred; tears stung my eyes. I
leaned against the wall for support.
If this were before, I would have been upset
and started a fight.
But now, my heart felt like a withered leaf in
the autumn wind–empty.
I took a deep breath, suppressing my
emotions.
I said nothing.
L
In three days, I’d be gone. Their lives would
no longer concern me.
