That night, perhaps because my heart was
already dead, I slept soundly.
But then I saw Tiffany holding a jade pendant,
broken in two.
“Is this yours? I accidentally broke it…”
The familiar jade green made my blood run
cold.
I grabbed her hand, my eyes blazing. “Who
ᄀ
told you to touch my things! Why did you
break it!”
I always kept the pendant in a small box in a
drawer.
Tiffany had done it on purpose.
Seeing my grandmother’s only remaining
possession shattered, my anger exploded. I
snatched the pieces from her.
Tiffany stumbled backward, knocking over a
nearby glass rack.
Amid the shattering glass, she fell onto the
carpet.
Before I could react, Jason shoved me onto
the broken glass. My wrist gushed blood.
“Are you crazy?!” Jason roared, shocked and
furious.
Seeing my bleeding wrist, he only frowned
slightly.
He then averted his gaze, rushing to help
Tiffany.
<
“Sis, I’m sorry I broke the pendant. Hit me,
yell at me…”
Jason’s eyes darted between us, finally
landing on me with anger.
“Lindsay, it’s just a pendant! Why are you
acting like a maniac?!”
I screamed, “It was the only thing Grandma
left me!”
Jason’s eyes widened, then returned to their
hard glare.
“She’s gone. That pendant’s useless. It’s
broken, so what? I’ll buy you an identical
one.”
His words enraged me. He knew Grandma
was my only family. He knew how much the
pendant meant to me. He knew, yet he said
that…
My vision swam. I shouted,
“It was locked in the cabinet! How did she get
it?!”
“Jason! Are you even human?!”
Seeing my distress, Tiffany cried.
“Sis, I didn’t mean to… please forgive me…”
She tried to kneel.
Jason stopped her, glaring at me.
“Look what you did to her!”
“She’s apologizing, what more do you want?!”
His impatience was palpable. His cold eyes
seemed to pierce me. It was as if I was the
one being unreasonable.
Tiffany clung to Jason, tearful, as if she were
the victim.
I clenched my jaw, letting the blood stain the
carpet.
In that moment, I realized our relationship was
beyond repair.
Before I could speak, Jason pulled Tiffany
away.
Watching them go, I felt a surge of blood to
my head. My heart felt like it was being
crushed.
I stood there, wanting the day of my
departure to arrive quickly.
