We were providing medical aid to refugees.
I was bandaging a little girl when I heard a
familiar voice.
“Lindsay? Is that you?”
I turned around. It was Jason.
He was thinner, older than before. Time had
etched its mark on his face.
Before I could react, he grabbed my wrist.
“It’s you. Lindsay, I found you.”
“I’ve searched for you endlessly… I thought
I’d never see you again…”
His voice was hoarse, filled with disbelief and
excitement. His grip on my wrist was tight; he
feared I might vanish again.
I calmly pulled away, taking a few steps back.
Wasn’t he supposed to be with Tiffany? Why
was he here?
I didn’t ask; I just stared at this uninvited
guest.
“What are you doing here?”
Tears welled in Jason’s eyes. “Lindsay, after
all this time… you just leave? Are you really
that heartless?”
I raised an eyebrow. “What else was I
supposed to do? Wait for you and Tiffany to
humiliate me again?”
Hurt flashed in Jason’s eyes. He took my
hand, his voice choked with emotion.
“I’m sorry. It was all my fault. Come back to
me.”
“I promise, I’ll never treat you like that again. I
love you… always have…”
Hearing his words felt ridiculous, so I tore
open my old wounds.
“You love me, and yet you humiliated me at
the reunion?”
“You love me, and you ignored me when I was
sick, making me cook for another woman?”
“You love me, yet you believed Tiffany’s lies,
blaming me for everything?”
“Jason, I can’t take your so–called love.”
I pulled my hand away, returning to my work.
Jason’s face went from red to pale. He
trembled, pleading.
“Yes, it’s my fault, I apologize…”
“Lindsay, please, give me a chance to make
amends.”
“I’ve sent Tiffany away. She won’t bother us
again!”
I took a deep breath, calmly replying,
<
“Jason, you still don’t understand. It wasn’t
about Tiffany; it’s your uncaring heart.”
“Some things can’t be undone.”
I saw Ethan approaching, and smiled faintly.
“Besides, I have a new boyfriend.”
Jason’s face turned white. He stammered,
“Boyfriend? We’re not divorced! You can’t
just date someone else!”
I chuckled, “Jason, we never got married or
even registered our engagement!”
I remembered how our planned wedding kept
getting postponed due to Tiffany’s
interference.
“So… we have no relationship… Who I date is
none of your business.”
My gaze was icy, devoid of warmth.
Seeing his disbelief, I pulled Ethan forward.
Putting my arm around Ethan, I introduced
him, “This is my boyfriend, Ethan.”
Jason seemed to lose his strength. He
く
trembled, his voice choked with emotion, his
eyes darting between me and Ethan, finally
settling on me.
“I don’t believe you… Lindsay… You’re
lying….”
“You’re doing this for revenge, aren’t you?”
Giving up, I said coldly,
“Believe what you want. We’re saving lives;
don’t delay my work.”
I pulled Ethan away, leaving Jason there, his
eyes filled with despair and regret.
