Suddenly, he remembered the last time he saw Adeline; she had tears in her eyes but managed a smile as she spoke to him.
“Jasper, I can’t be with you anymore.”
At the time, Jasper thought Adeline was just being impulsive. They had been together since they were young, and Adeline had stood by him through the toughest times, constantly working part–time to support his MMA dream.
“It can’t be true; she’s just upset. She wouldn’t really want a divorce.”
He said this while tearing up the divorce agreement in his hand.
Wiping his tears, he noticed a recording pen in the corner of the box. He turned it on and heard Phoebe’s voice.
“You see how much I love him; if it’s not his child, I won’t have it~”
Jasper felt a surge of anger that clouded his judgment. Before he knew it, he had already broken down Phoebe’s door and was gripping her throat tightly.
“Whose child is it?! What did tell Adeline?!”
Phoebe heard this and, realizing her actions had been exposed, laughed aloud.
“Haven’t you figured it out?”
“I don’t know where Adeline went, but I do these litt
sh
will never forgive you.”
Jasper’s eyes were bloodshot, but Phoebe continued with a mocking tone as if she hadn’t noticed.
“You ruined her right hand because of me, aborted her child, and now she can never hold her beloved scalpel again!”
“If I were Adeline, I’d be filled with lifelong hatred for you!”
“Oh, no! You didn’t do it for me; you did it for yourself!”
“You love Adeline, but every time you see her, you’re reminded of your tragic past!”
“You destroyed her right hand! Just to make her depend on you entirely!”
Years of MMA training made Jasper a formidable opponent; Phoebe, just a young woman, was no match for him.
Phoebe’s face turned increasingly blue and purple as her resistance weakened.
In the end, it was Finn who arrived just in time, grabbing a nearby vase to knock Jasper unconscious,
Phoebe rushed into Finn’s arms, sobbing, but Finn instinctively pushed her away, speaking with a complicated expression.
“Phoebe, do you remember the exact spot of the pond where you saved me as a child?”
Phoebe seemed caught off guard by the question, avoiding his gaze.
“How long ago was that… how could I remember…”
“Finn, call the police and have him arrested, I’m so scared…”
Seeing her like this, Finn’s heart sank. It seemed the letter Adeline left was right; the person who saved him back then might not have been Phoebe.
He only remembered that the little girl wore a jade pendant around her neck. When he met Phoebe as an adult, he noticed her pendant was
the same, and Phoebe claimed to be his savior.
But in the gift box Adeline left for him, there was a pendant identical to the one he remembered.
Since they worked in the same hospital, it didn’t take Finn long to find out where Adeline had gone, but when he learned the news, he hesitated.
One night while on duty, Phoebe came with a thermal container.
“Finn, I made this myself, try it~”
Inside was a delicious–looking tomato and egg stir–fry.
Suddenly, Finn remembered Adeline had made the same dish for him once.
That year, Finn and Adeline were chosen to provide aid in Xinjiang. At the makeshift clinic on the Gobi Desert, supplies were scarce, and the temperature fluctuations were extreme. Finn caught a severe cold.
Adeline, cooking for the first time in her life, made him a bowl of tomato and egg stir–fry.
Later, when his fever wouldn’t subside and the clinic ran out of medication, Adeline had no choice but to carry him on her back through the Gobi Desert overnight to the nearest hospital.
Tears blurred his vision, and for the first time, Finn felt regret.
Phoebe’s voice remained sweet.
“Finn, I’ve realized that only you truly love me.”
“Will you marry me
Finn snapped back to reality and replied almost without hesitation.
“I won’t.”
