I thought my daughter was a gift from God, a blessing. But now, I see it as a brutal lesson! From the moment she was born, Mark and I grew further apart. He became colder, working late, often staying out all night. At first, I thought it was my imagination. I talked to Lily for hours. She felt the same
way.

We thought the Miller brothers were busy
because of company issues. But their
assistants told us the company was doing
better than ever, no problems for years. There
were no board meetings, no new projects, no need for late nights. The truth hit me like a
ton of bricks.
I couldn’t sleep, unwilling to believe it. When my suspicions overpowered my reason, I asked Mark. He insisted Jessica was just a friend, a sister. I loved him, so I believed him. My foolish trust tore me apart.
Lily sobbed at the graveside. I comforted her
until we calmed down. We left and ran into David.
His face was grim, “My brother called the police, they’re looking for the driver.”
I just nodded. As I helped Lily leave, he said,
“He saw the security footage. He wants you
to come…

I looked into his defeated eyes. I was
exhausted. All my negative emotions
exploded.
Lily yelled at David, “Where was he? She’s
buried, and only then he calls the police! Why did he let her go out? Did she bother them at the hotel?”
She became more agitated, poking his chest, “Why are you acting all devastated now? Was your mouth full of cake last night?”
“You were so quick to yell when I called, why are you silent now?”
David hung his head. He slapped himself. I sighed, “Let’s go see what he found.”
“Let’s see what other lies he’s concocting.”
David took us to the police station. Mark was
waiting outside, looking dejected. I felt no
sympathy.
Lily and I walked past him, ignoring his
outstretched hand.
At the interrogation room, the police showed
us the footage from the night of the accident.
