Mom didn’t like me. Even though my grades
were good, she never cared.
But Mom was cheering herself on, “Brittany is
so talented, she can catch up after playing for
two years. But you, you’re working so hard, but
you’re always second best.”
Her words made me work even harder.
Even if I was a fool, I could catch up.
It was almost time to decide.

I stayed at school to keep Mom away from me.
Most students went home, but I couldn’t sleep
in my room.
I was nervous, and this was my only chance to
change my life.
Then the exam ended.
I was cleaning tables at a restaurant when I got
the offer from Harvard.
My heart started beating, and I felt every
hardship I went through.
I felt like I could breathe.
The ladies I was working with were talking to me, and my boss gave me a 1,000 dollar bonus.
The school asked me to put on a flower so they could take my picture, and gave me 20,000
<
dollars in bonus.
When I got the bonus, the first thing I did was
get a DNA test.
I got two, one with Mom, and one with Aunt
Carol.
But I was shocked by the results.
Brittany got me to go to her party.
Even though she got a normal job, Aunt Carol and my uncle were happy for her.
Brittany looked at me. “What does it matter if you got in Harvard, your mom never loved you, but my parents do.”
I was able to smile and said, “Congratulations on getting in, I hope you’re always coddled by your parents.”

Brittany didn’t look too happy and walked away.
Mom arrived, and held a set of car keys.
She gave the car keys to Brittany, “Good girl, this is Auntie’s graduation gift. Don’t forget about Auntie!”
Brittany was happy.
Mom looked at me and made me embarrassed.
“What are you doing here? Even if you get to
go to Harvard, you won’t get a penny of my money!”
Aunt Carol told her, “She’s your daughter, stop being so cold.”
Mom said, “She was a mistake, if I could get rid
of her I would have.”
The family gave me a look of sympathy.
<
Mom stared at me, but I didn’t look sad, and
that made her sad.
I looked at Mom and said, “Why are you so hard on your daughter?”
“You were a leech, do you really think you can
be my daughter? What makes you think that you’re somebody?”
“I can only have a daughter like Brittany, not like you!”
She hated me.
I wasn’t happy, but I didn’t have to feel that
way.
The event turned quiet. Everyone heard what Mom said.
Aunt Carol didn’t say anything, and Brittany looked at me with pity.
<
Only my uncle was on my side, and said for her
not to say anything.
But Mom said, “You were a disappointment,
because I was never able to feel good about myself! I’m going to trap you.”
“What do you have to do to be like Brittany, the school must have made a mistake!”
I looked at her, “That’s right, I’m never able to
be like Brittany, and you will never be like Aunt Carol.”
Mom froze and Aunt Carol looked at me. “What does that mean?”
I slowly put two tests on the table, but didn’t open it.
“Mom, do you know? I heard you. When I was
born, you changed me with Brittany.”
<
Mom’s face lost all color and ran to hit me and asked, “What are you saying? I never said that!”
I added, “I also went to Aunt Carol. She said
she knew, but I wouldn’t be her daughter.”
Aunt Carol froze and had to handle the crowd
by herself, and didn’t expect that someone would be so dumb.
“So, I got two DNA tests.”
