Chapter 141
Zachary’s eyes turned cold after hearing what Melanie said.
“You know about her and Harrison?” he asked.
If the Jenkins family knew Gwyneth was Harrison’s lover, then this was clearly more complicated than it seemed.
“Gwyneth is your half–sister. Why didn’t you stop her?” Zachary kept pressing.
Melanie was surprised he didn’t even react when she called him Gwyneth’s suck–up. Instead, he kept speaking up for Gwyneth. She was jealous that Gwyneth could attract so many amazing men.
Anger flared up in Melanie, and she blurted out, “Why would we stop her? Ever since she joined Harrison’s-”
Before she could finish, Diana rushed in with the food and quickly cut her off. “Ever since Gwyneth joined Harrison’s circle, her status has shot up. Not just Melanie, even I don’t dare mess with her.”
Melanie suddenly realized what she was saying and quickly covered her mouth. She had almost let it slip that Gwyneth and Harrison were already married.
Diana shot Melanie a sharp glare, cursing her stupidity in her mind.
If Zachary found out Gwyneth had married Harrison, he’d give up on getting back together with her.
And once Zachary was out of the picture, Gwyneth would focus completely on Harrison. If Harrison backed her up, Diana, Melanie, and Quentin would probably get bullied by her every day.
Diana and Melanie still needed Zachary to keep causing trouble for Gwyneth.
But after what he just heard, Zachary’s face turned dark. “Even you–her stepmother–knew about her and Harrison.”
He thought of all the unfair things Gwyneth had gone through at home and started to wonder if the whole Jenkins family had forced her into being Harrison’s mistress.
After all, when she left him, she didn’t take anything with her. She went back to a family that didn’t love her, with no money or power. Zachary believed Gwyneth couldn’t do anything but get bullied.
That thought filled him with rage. His eyes went red, and he completely forgot about Gwyneth using him earlier.
When Gwyneth walked out of the office, Zachary rushed forward and grabbed her wrist before she could say a word, his eyes full of pity. “Gwyneth, I was wrong about you,” he said.
Gwyneth didn’t understand what he meant at first, but when she saw Diana and Melanie standing beside him, she instantly got it.
Diana and Melanie always liked to talk bad about her. Now they were standing by the office door with Zachary, waiting for her. It was clear that Zachary already knew she had used him.
She didn’t bother hiding it. “What you heard is true. Now can you let go of me?”
She was admitting that she had used Zachary’s feelings for her to get him to sign the contract and achieve her goal. But to Zachary, it sounded like she was confessing to being forced by the Jenkins family to be Harrison’s mistress.
Therefore, he felt even more sorry for her. “Gwennie, I’m sorry. I treated you badly before. Please give me a chance. I’ll take you to candlelight dinners, concerts… I’ll even get you a custom violin you’ll love…”
Zachary kept talking, hoping he could outdo Harrison and make Gwyneth forget the past and come back to him.
His voice was full of emotion, but Gwyneth frowned. She couldn’t break free. “I don’t need any of that. I have work to do. Let me go.”
“What do you want, then? Whatever it is, I’ll do it for you,” Zachary said, still holding her wrist tightly.
Gwyneth just felt a headache coming on. Zachary had made promises like this before, but he never kept any of them.
He had promised to take her to a candlelight dinner at a rooftop restaurant, but it never happened. He had never taken her to a concert because of work. And thirteen years had passed, yet she had never gotten the custom violin he had promised.
