Chapter 143
“That’s right,” Gwyneth said. “I told him if the food here was good, we’d come back together next time.”
She didn’t catch the teasing in Evan’s eyes. To her, that kind of agreement with Harrison was no different from making dinner plans with a friend. Just a meal–nothing more.
Evan blinked, then rubbed his forehead and let out a helpless laugh. He seriously considered texting Harrison about how clueless Gwyneth was when it came to feelings.
Luckily, they had a lot in common. By the end of the meal, Gwyneth was in a good mood.
Full and satisfied, the two of them headed to the parking lot to grab the car and return to the studio to check the kiln. When they got there, Evan politely opened the car door for her.
“Thanks.” Gwyneth didn’t mind gentlemen–she smiled lightly and got in.
Nearby, Zachary was standing with Bella.
Bella, who had also just finished dinner, clung to Zachary’s arm and asked, “Zachary, isn’t that Gwyneth? Why’s she with another guy again?”
Zachary tensed immediately. If the Jenkins family could push Gwyneth to be Harrison’s mistress, they could also make her cozy up to other men.
He followed Bella’s gaze and saw Gwyneth sitting in the front passenger seat of Evan’s car. Without thinking, he charged forward.
Evan had just gotten into the driver’s seat when he heard a distant shout. “Gwennie!”
Gwyneth snapped out of her thoughts and fastened her seatbelt. “That guy’s a stalker. Shut the door, quick.”
“Got it,” Evan said, slamming the door and locking it.
By the time Zachary reached the car, all he could do was slam his fist against the window in frustration.
“Open up! Tell Gwyneth to get out,” he said, thinking, ‘She’s not some toy to please random men.’
Evan glanced at the furious Zachary and, remembering Harrison’s warning, figured this was the stalker Harrison had mentioned. He rolled the window down just a crack.
“Sir, you’re way out of line,” Evan said. “You ran up here, hit my car, and now you’re demanding my guest get out. Who exactly do you think you are?”
Zachary froze. He couldn’t claim to be Gwyneth’s boyfriend–they were already broken up.
All he could do was press against the window and shout her name. “Gwyneth, Gwennie, come on, get out of the car. I’ll drive you home safely. You don’t need to get in some stranger’s car.
“If you’re being threatened, just blink and I’ll call the cops. I won’t let anyone hurt you.”
Gwyneth was getting a headache. “Roll the window up. He’s too loud.”
Zachary paused mid–sentence.
Evan gave a cold chuckle. “You heard her, man. You’re annoying. Time to move.”
Right then, Evan slammed his foot on the gas. The engine roared, and the sudden sound made Zachary jump back in surprise, stumbling a few steps.
Evan laughed. “Dude, I just hit the gas and you freaked out? If that’s all the guts you’ve got, maybe don’t go chasing women–you’re making us all look bad.”
With that, Evan hit the gas again and sped off with Gwyneth in the car. They disappeared from Zachary’s view in seconds.
Zachary stood there, his face pale from the sting of being mocked.
Bella rushed over and grabbed Zachary’s arm, her face full of worry. “Zachary, that really scared me. I thought Gwyneth’s new guy was actually gonna run you over. Are you okay?”
Zachary immediately caught the way Bella had called Evan Gwyneth’s new guy. His expression darkened, and he snapped, “Shut up. Gwyneth’s not the type to just move on like that. She’s still with Harrison-”
