Gwyneth said directly, “Among the documents you just destroyed, besides the Mercer Group’s records, there were also confidential files I brought from the Jenkins Group.
“You’ve committed corporate espionage. If you don’t name the mastermind right now, I’ll have my lawyers press charges and make sure every one of you gets a minimum three–year sentence.”
As soon as Gwyneth finished speaking, the previously silent thugs all jerked their heads up in shock.
Jail? She never said this would land us in jail,” one of them said.
“I don’t want to go to jail!” another shouted.
Clyde was stunned, thinking, ‘A moment ago, Mrs. Lopez was gentle and comforting, and now she’s sending them to jail. No wonder she’s the kind of woman Harrison has his eye on!
Gwyneth said nothing more. The police officers acted swiftly. Following the leads, they had Miranda Leblanc, the mastermind, brought in within minutes.
Miranda didn’t dare put up a fight as the officers dragged her over, but the moment she was shoved before Gwyneth, her eyes burned red with fury.
She sneered, “Don’t think I don’t know you’re tricking these stupid thugs! The Jenkins Group’s confidential information could never be brought to the Mercer Group. It’s not going to work.
“Besides, these files are mine. What’s it to you if I want them destroyed?”
Gwyneth’s head was throbbing from her jabber. She said coolly, “Only fools turn to other fools for help. Miranda, you saw right through my entrapment. Someone as sharp as you should know that company files belong to whoever holds power.”
Gwyneth arched an eyebrow. Her eyes were full of contempt as she looked at Miranda. “Right now, I run the Mercer Group. You’re just an abandoned manager. What right do you have to touch any of this?”
If it weren’t for Miranda embezzling company funds, the Mercer Group wouldn’t have declined so rapidly.
Miranda never expected Gwyneth to be so bold. Seeing her situation was hopeless, with bloodshot eyes, she smashed a nearby antique, grabbed a sharp shard, and lunged at Gwyneth. “You’re the idiot. I’ll… I’ll kill you.”
“Watch out!” Sharon exclaimed, quickly grabbing Gwyneth by the arm.
Gwyneth’s eyes widened in shock. She never expected Miranda to be this unhinged. The sharp antique shard came lunging straight at her face.
She instinctively squeezed her eyes shut and stumbled back. But instead of feeling pain, she heard something heavy crashing onto the floor. She snapped her eyes open, only to find a towering figure instantly shielding her in shadow.
Harrison instinctively reached out toward her face, where she’d almost been hurt. “You okay?” he asked quietly, his eyes cold and sharp.
In the end, he let his hand fall, afraid of crossing a line. He was also afraid everything between them would be ruined if his true feelings were exposed.
Out of the corner of her eye, Gwyneth finally saw Miranda get violently kicked to the ground. Several police officers and security guards immediately swarmed in to restrain her.
Miranda thrashed on the ground, shouting, “Let go of me. I’m a law–abiding citizen. Let go. Ah!”
“Save it for the station,” an officer barked, swiftly cuffing her.
Gwyneth slowly calmed down from her shock and met Harrison’s gaze. “I’m fine. You got here just in time. That shard didn’t even graze me.”
“You already sent Clyde. Why come yourself? Not busy?”
A storm brewed in Harrison’s eyes. He thought, ‘Seriously? After all this, all Gwyneth cares about is why I came and whether I’m busy?‘
His heart nearly stopped the moment he walked in and saw Miranda lunging at her. But when he met Gwyneth’s innocent gaze, he couldn’t bring himself to utter a single word of reproach.
He hesitated for a moment and then replied in a low voice, “I just happened to be passing by.”
Gwyneth blinked in confusion. ‘The Lopez Group building is halfway across the city from here, right? He was just passing by?‘
