Chapter 65
Zachary had a meeting at Jenkins Croup anyway, so he caught up and walked beside her.
“Gwyneth, are you trash–talking me to Harrison? You don’t want him to know about the thirteen years we had together, is that it?” he asked.
“You’re really full of yourself, Gwyneth replied.
They stepped into the elevator together. Once the doors closed and it was just the two of them, she actually smiled, not angry at all. “I’m just Harrison’s mistress. Why would he care about my past?
“I can’t even get him to notice me.
if you’re my ex and I’m a nobody to him, maybe you should stop dreaming about climbing higher.”
At her words, Zachary’s face darkened with fury.
The elevator stopped again. Gwyneth looked out and couldn’t help thinking the world was small.
Melanie walked in arms full of files. She saw the two of them and told the others to wait for the next
elevator, stepping in alone.
As soon as the doors shut, she smiled sweetly and said to Zachary, “Mr. Flynn, how come your girlfriend didn’t come with you today?”
Bella’s just a friend. My girlfriend is someone else,” Zachary answered quickly.
Gwyneth raised an eyebrow slightly. Melanie hadn’t said any names, but it was clear Zachary knew exactly who she meant. It seemed everyone already knew how inseparable he and Bella had been lately.
Melanie had meant to stir things up and get under Gwyneth’s skin, but Zachary’s quick denial of any relationship with Bella left her feeling deflated. She turned her head away, clearly annoyed and unwilling to embarrass herself further.
The elevator fell silent. Gwyneth was perfectly fine with that—she had no interest in wasting words on these two clowns.
When the elevator reached their floor, the three of them walked toward the meeting room
Gwyneth’s office was close to the conference room. Just before reaching it, they split up–Melanie led Zachary toward the meeting, while Gwyneth turned to head back to her office.
But before she could take a step, Zachary called out from a distance, “Aren’t you the one meeting with me today?”
“Mr. Flynn, I’ll be handling the meeting, Melanie said quickly.
Zachary’s expression tightened with a flash of rage. He hadn’t expected Gwyneth to avoid him this completely.
He’d brought a big deal from Everprosper Group, not just to discuss business, but to support Gwyneth and help her gain a stronger footing at Jenkins Group. But she was shutting him out both personally and professionally. The thought made him frown deeply…
Gwyneth heard Melanie’s reply and gave a slight nod. Jenkins Group is a big company. You’ll find someone to work with. I have other—”
Zachary cut her off at the meeting room door. “I requested you as the lead on this project, Gwyneth. At the meeting. I expect to hear from you.”
Gwyneth went silent for a moment.
By now, quite a few employees on the floor had started peeking out of their offices, whispering and watching the standoff.
The noise gave Gwyneth a headache. After a quick internal debate, she decided to show up at the meeting and say a few words—just to keep things from dragging out.
Zachary and Melanie entered first. Gwyneth followed behind them a moment later.
What she didn’t expect was to see Quentin already sitting inside.
Quentin knew all about her past with Zachary. His early arrival made it obvious–he was here to stir the pot.
Gwyneth didn’t have the patience to watch these three fools put on a show at the same table. Her eyes swept over them coldly.
“Mr Flynn,” she said, “since even the boss of Jenkins Group is here to talk with you, I’ll leave you to it. Enjoy the meeting”
